Representation of Actors of Color Takes a Sharp Decline at the 2026 Emmy Awards

The representation rate of actors of color (of Asian, Black, and Latino descent) at the 2026 Emmy Awards showed a striking decline compared to previous years. Among this year's nominees, there are only 18 actors of color, a situation that brings concerns about diversity and inclusion in the television world back to the agenda. While 24 of the 92 nominated actors were actors of color last year, 2024 was remembered as a record period with 30 nominees. For example, Sepideh Moafi, with her role in HBO's "The Pitt," made history as the first actress of Iranian descent to be nominated in the dramatic acting categories. Moafi, who brings the character Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi to life in the second season of the series, is considered to be very close to winning the award in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category. This success, following award-winning Iranian actors like Shohreh Aghdashloo and Arian Moayed, represents a proud moment for diaspora communities. Such individual success stories show that even amid a systemic decline, talents inevitably rise to the surface.

Outside of the acting categories, artists of color continued to leave their mark in technical fields such as directing. Notably, Salli Richardson-Whitfield was nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for her work on "The Gilded Age" and "Task". Such achievements prove how essential it is to ensure equal opportunity and diversity behind the camera as well.
