Ankara Governor's Office Imposes Citywide Parking Ban Before NATO Summit

The Ankara Governor's Office has taken security measures to the highest level by declaring a comprehensive parking ban throughout the city prior to a critical summit to be held in the capital. Under the decree, vehicles will not be allowed to park in all designated areas, including shopping mall (AVM) courtyards, parking lots of public institutions and organizations, private repair shops, and industrial zones. This measure is considered a radical precaution taken to prevent possible security vulnerabilities and minimize any action that could occur during the summit, even at the cost of partially restricting the city's functioning.

Officials making a statement regarding the issue emphasized that the application is temporary and will continue until July 9, asking citizens to be sensitive. It was clearly announced that vehicles left in the prohibited zones during this period would be immediately removed by police teams with official towing vehicles and taken to car pounds if warnings are ignored. In a final warning by the Governor's Office, it was stated that the public was informed to ensure transparency and that the process would be overcome with fewer problems if the necessary cooperation was shown.

It was stated that the main reason behind this decision is the high-level international summit to be held in Ankara and ensuring the security of the state leaders attending the meeting. Ankara Police Department teams have started to subject all suspicious packages or vehicles to detailed inspections by establishing security checkpoints at certain main arteries as well as at the entrances and exits of the city. Particularly in areas close to the summit area, it is planned to gradually close parking lots open to the public and direct citizens to alternative transportation networks.

Experts and urban planners draw attention to the importance of alternative solutions to avoid burdening city traffic and victimizing citizens due to such short-term widespread bans. The inclusion of parking lots of crowded areas such as AVMs in the ban is shown as one of the most radical steps affecting daily life, and citizens are called upon to leave their vehicles in the parking lots of their homes or safe zones. It was conveyed that the procedures regarding when normalization will be achieved after the summit and when the removed vehicles will be delivered to their owners will become clear in the coming days, and that the priority is currently security.
