Apple sued OpenAI, accusing it of stealing trade secrets

Technology giant Apple has launched a major legal maneuver against artificial intelligence company OpenAI and some of its current and former employees, alleging the theft of trade secrets. The lawsuit, filed last Friday in a United States federal court, reveals that the competition between the two technology giants has reached a new dimension. According to Apple's claims, OpenAI followed a highly planned and systematic strategy to obtain secret product development data. In the lawsuit, not only OpenAI but also two employees of the company and a design venture named 'io Products', acquired by OpenAI, are named as defendants. This legal process raises questions about how far the fierce competition in the artificial intelligence sector may have pushed these companies.

Among the claims that Apple is trying to prove valid are serious allegations that former employees leaked highly confidential documents before leaving the company. The company management alleges that at least two long-time Apple personnel sent secret company documents to their personal email addresses just before leaving the institution. These individuals are reported to have subsequently joined OpenAI. The documents in question include highly sensitive projects, production technologies, information regarding commercial business partners, and plans for unreleased products. Apple argues that this data transfer was carried out in an intentional and organized manner.

Another notable claim in the lawsuit file is that OpenAI abused its hiring processes to its own advantage. Apple alleges that during job interviews, OpenAI officials and recruitment teams attempted to extract confidential information from personnel already employed at Apple. Going even further, it is stated that some interview candidates were asked to bring actual Apple hardware parts or materials with them. Such behaviors are considered serious evidence that could give rise to industrial espionage charges in the technology world. All these events reveal the dimensions of the war for talent and information among technology companies.

On the other hand, OpenAI rejected all these serious allegations, presenting its own defense. Company spokesperson Drew Pusateri, in a statement to the BBC, emphasized that they are absolutely not interested in any other company's trade secrets. OpenAI management stated that they are closely following and examining the lawsuit process, expressing that their main focus is developing innovative artificial intelligence technologies that will benefit humanity. In contrast, the Apple side did not refrain from asserting that the legal step in question was taken based on 'significant evidence' and that they have solid proof behind them. As the court process progresses, this information war between the two giant companies will become even more apparent.

Experts believe that this lawsuit heralds a fundamental and major change in the relationship between Apple and OpenAI. As is known, the two companies were once collaborating to integrate ChatGPT into Apple devices, and this partnership was formalized with the announcement of the 'Apple Intelligence' platform in 2024. However, Apple's recent move to start using Google's Gemini model for some artificial intelligence features confirms rumors that cracks have formed in the collaboration. This technological partnership, which started just two years ago, has now turned into a stage for a complex legal battle. While Apple is demanding a ban on OpenAI's use of the confidential information in question, it also filed a lawsuit for non-monetary damages; however, no specific monetary demand was stated.
