Minister Bayraktar discusses energy cooperation with Iraqi deputy ministers

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar received Iraqi Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs M. Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom, Iraqi Deputy Minister of Oil Naser Azez Jabbar, and Iraq's Ambassador to Ankara Majid Al-Lachmawi at the Ministry. During the meeting, energy cooperation between Turkey and Iraq was discussed. In particular, the status and future of the Iraq-Turkey Crude Oil Pipeline were addressed. Additionally, the development of new joint projects in the fields of oil, natural gas, and electricity was discussed. Minister Bayraktar stated that the meeting was productive.

In a statement on his social media account, Minister Bayraktar emphasized that Turkey views the Kalkınma Yolu project not just as a transportation corridor, but as a strategic energy route that will strengthen the region's energy supply security. In line with this vision, he expressed that they are acting in close cooperation with the new Iraqi Government. He said that the existing infrastructure needs to be used more effectively and supported with new connections. Steps to be taken to increase energy trade between the two countries were also evaluated during the meeting.

The Iraq-Turkey Crude Oil Pipeline is one of the cornerstones of the energy relations between the two countries. However, in recent years, there have been occasional interruptions due to technical problems and security concerns experienced on the line. During the meeting, the works that could be done to increase the capacity of the pipeline and make it safer were discussed. Furthermore, opportunities for cooperation regarding the transportation of oil from the oil fields in northern Iraq to world markets via Turkey were brought to the table.

Turkey and Iraq aim for a long-term partnership in the field of energy. Minister Bayraktar stated that cooperation with Iraq is of critical importance for Turkey on its path to becoming an energy center. An agreement was reached to implement new projects in the fields of natural gas and electricity as well. In particular, an exchange of ideas took place regarding the strengthening of cross-border electricity lines and the diversification of natural gas pipelines. These projects are expected to contribute to regional energy security.

The meeting was considered an important step in terms of strengthening the diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries. Minister Bayraktar expressed that Turkey's support will continue during Iraq's reconstruction process. The Iraqi delegation, on the other hand, stated that they attach great importance to energy cooperation with Turkey and want to accelerate joint projects in this field. Although no official agreement was signed after the meeting, it was stated that technical-level works will continue.
