Tragedy in Bayrampaşa: Falling Concrete Parts Claim Woman's Life

A tragic accident that occurred in the evening in the Muratpaşa Neighborhood of Istanbul's Bayrampaşa district resulted in the death of 54-year-old Fatma Kalkancı. Around 20.30, concrete pieces, thought to have broken from the roof of two apartment buildings, fell down and hit Fatma Kalkancı, who was sitting at the door of the building at that time. Neighbors running at the noise saw the unfortunate woman lying on the ground and immediately rushed to her aid, reporting the situation to the emergency service. Fatma Kalkancı, who received first intervention by the health teams dispatched to the scene, could not be saved despite intensive care and emergency intervention and lost her life. This grim event has caused concern and anxiety regarding building safety and roof renovations in the area.

The husband of the deceased woman, Ertan Kalkancı, made a statement expressing that he was not at the scene of the incident despite his immense grief and that fate brought this painful result. He said he ran to the hospital immediately when his wife was informed, but when he arrived, regrettably it was too late and he learned that Fatma Kalkancı's heart had stopped before reaching the hospital. In his speech, stating "The incident is being investigated, an inquiry has been opened," Ertan Kalkancı noted that the legal process had begun, saying there was nothing to do in the face of this disaster and that they submitted to the will of God. While the family and relatives describe the details of the event, they are trying to cope with the shock and mourning they experienced. Police units continue their examinations meticulously regarding the incident.

Miftar Kalkancı, who witnessed the moment of the incident and is the family's son-in-law, recounted that they were sitting at home in the evening when they suddenly heard a deafening noise and commotion. He stated that he was shocked by the scene he saw when he immediately went down, seeing that concrete pieces had fallen on his aunt's head and that her skull was cracked. Noting that neighbors realized the situation with the help of those around and ran to the scene and an ambulance was called immediately, Miftar Kalkancı realized at that moment how grave his aunt's life threat was. Although neighbors tried to perform first intervention in the time until the ambulance teams arrived, the situation was very serious.

Regrettably, the health teams and doctors were also unsuccessful with Fatma Kalkancı, who was taken to the hospital by ambulance, and the woman could not be saved despite all efforts at the hospital she was taken to. Family relatives stated that despite the intense efforts of the doctors at the hospital and all medical interventions such as cardiac massage, Fatma Kalkancı could not hold on to life and passed away, and they had to accept the painful truth. In this quite shocking event, while the funeral was sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute morgue, autopsy and legal process procedures were initiated. Police teams came to the scene, conducted examinations, and started a detailed investigation into the unfortunate accident caused by the concrete pieces falling from the roof.

Preparations were made to hand over the deceased's body to her family after the completion of the procedures at the Forensic Medicine Institute. Fatma Kalkancı's body was accompanied by prayers from her loved ones and relatives by taking leave in front of her house to be sent on her last journey. The funeral of the woman who passed away was sent to her hometown, Karasu district of Sakarya, to be buried. While her loved ones convey their condolences to the family at the condolence house, security warnings for building owners and officials and the necessity of periodic control of buildings came to the fore again following this incident in Bayrampaşa. It is requested that officials be attentive so that such disasters do not happen again.
