Record heatwave in Belgium: Deaths rise 39% above normal

The severe heatwave that affected Belgium between 18 and 29 June led to alarming consequences for public health in the country. According to preliminary official figures, the total number of deaths recorded during this 11-day period was approximately 39% above seasonal norms and expected statistical levels. This increase once again highlights the severity of the situation created by heatwaves in the country, causing the highest daily mortality rates seen since the pandemic periods.

The picture emerging from the detailed figures clearly demonstrates how the elderly population is affected by this disaster. According to data shared by the Belgium Risk Management Group (RMG), the 1222 excess deaths that occurred during this period have been recorded as the highest number of 'excess deaths' linked to heatwaves in the country's history. While the vast majority of these losses consisted of citizens aged 85 and over, the loss of 180 lives in the population under 65 demonstrated that the risk is not limited only to the elderly.

Meteorological data clearly reveal the main cause of this health crisis. Throughout the heatwave, temperatures in the country remained above 30 degrees for seven consecutive days. The extreme heat felt during the day was accompanied by temperatures above seasonal norms at night, which negatively affected the body's rest and recovery process. Weather conditions posed a life-threatening danger, particularly for vulnerable groups with chronic conditions.

Following these negative developments, Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke made statements regarding the issue. The Minister argued that the government and health authorities were aware of the process and stated that hospitals and care homes had prepared in advance for similar disasters. However, he emphasized that protecting vulnerable people is a joint responsibility of the whole society, drawing attention to the fact that the issue cannot be solved only with institutional measures.

Work has also begun to learn lessons and take measures in the face of the likelihood of encountering similar scenarios in the future. Minister Vandenbroucke instructed for the subject to be evaluated and analyzed comprehensively in all its aspects. Within this scope, the Belgium Risk Management Group (RMG) was requested to prepare new recommendations and strategic plans to ensure the country is much more resilient and prepared for the next heatwave.
