Work Accident in Belgrad: Young Worker Seriously Injured After Falling from Truck

A tragic work accident that took place in the late hours in Belgrad, the capital of Sırbistan, targeted one of the city's public service workers. At the center of the incident is a young man, a field worker for the “Gradska Čistoća” company, which carries out local cleaning and waste management activities. The worker in question fell from a moving or stationary truck while performing his duties during the night shift. The physical trauma resulting from this fall led to the formation of serious and life-threatening injuries on the employee's body.

Amidst the shock and chaos at the time of the accident, health teams were dispatched to the scene immediately. Belgrad Acil Yardım Merkezi officials stated that after the initial intervention at the scene, it was necessary to transfer the injured person, whose vital functions were at risk, to the nearest fully equipped health center. The seriously injured young worker was taken by ambulance to “Urgentni Centar”, the largest emergency service in Belgrad, specialized for emergency situations. The rapid and coordinated execution of the hospital transfer process revealed the care shown by the health team to stabilize the injured person's vital signs.

This tragic event brought the risks brought by the heavy traffic and intense work pace in Belgrad streets to the agenda once again. Secondary interactions occurring in or around the area where the truck fell increased the magnitude of the tragedy a bit more. Due to the nature of the incident and its impact on traffic flow, three separate traffic accidents occurred at the accident point. The vehicles and drivers involved in these secondary accidents collided with each other as a result of the distraction and narrowing of the maneuvering space created by the main event. These small-scale chain traffic accidents resulted only in material damage and minor physical injuries, fortunately.

Looking at the details regarding the condition of the injured, it is clearly seen that the health condition of the cleaning worker is much more critical than the others. The persons injured in the traffic accidents were able to be treated on an outpatient basis without life-threatening danger due to the mildness of the blows they received. However, it was reported that the young worker, who fell from the truck, was in life-threatening danger and a treatment process requiring intensive care or surgical intervention had begun at Urgentni Centar. Authorities stated that despite the surgical or medical interventions performed, the patient's general condition remains serious and he is kept under observation.

This incident once again reveals the need to review occupational safety standards for municipality and district municipality workers. It should be questioned whether personnel working in difficult and seasonal conditions, such as garbage collection and cleaning teams, use the necessary safety equipment while working on high vehicles. Factors such as reduced visibility at night and workload are among the elements that increase the risk layer. While city officials are expected to launch an investigation into the matter, Belgrad residents are also warned to be more careful in city transportation and to be aware of drivers giving right of way to emergency teams.
