Fuel Prices in Brazil Dropped in the Second Week of July

Recent data released by Brazil's National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) revealed a significant drop in fuel prices across the country during the week of 5-11 July. While price decreases in diesel fuel types were particularly notable, gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder prices also experienced a decline. This situation is important for easing the pressure of fuel expenses on households. These drops are clearly visible when compared to the previous week's price data. Officials state that this data can be evaluated as a positive signal regarding market price stability and consumer purchasing power.

The decline in diesel prices occurred at an equal rate for both S-10 and S-500 types, making it the most striking development of the week. The per-liter price of both diesel types decreased by 0.7 percent compared to the previous week. Notably, the average price of S-10 diesel fell from 7,02 Brazilian reals to 6,97 reals, contributing to the easing of costs in the transportation and logistics sectors. Similarly, the per-liter price of S-500 diesel dropped from 6,69 reals to 6,64 reals. These price changes stand out as critical factors that directly impact transportation costs and, consequently, the prices of basic consumer goods in the country.

Alongside diesel, a 0.4 percent decrease was observed in gasoline prices, with the average per-liter price falling from 6,61 reals to 6,58 reals. For liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, the decrease remained much more limited; with a 0.1 percent drop, the average price of a 13-kilogram cylinder was recorded at 114,41 reals. Although these data indicate a general downward trend in the fuel market, the decline in gas prices appears to be highly marginal. Price movements in gasoline and diesel offer important clues about how national inflation data will shape up in the upcoming period.

Research data also highlights how pronounced regional differences in fuel prices are. Prices in different cities across the country can vary significantly due to local tax policies, logistics costs, and competitive conditions. For instance, the most expensive diesel and gasoline price was recorded in the city of Guarujá, located in the state of São Paulo, reaching the highest level at 9,79 reals per liter. The highest LPG cylinder price was identified in the city of Uruguaiana in the state of Rio Grande do Sul at 161 reals. Such extreme regional prices further highlight citizens' living costs and income distribution inequalities.

On the other hand, the most affordable prices were recorded in different regions of the country, revealing that access to reasonably priced fuel can constitute a geographical disadvantage. The cheapest diesel fuel was offered at 5,89 reals per liter in Rio de Janeiro, while the lowest gasoline price was measured at 5,49 reals in the city of Araraquara, São Paulo. The lowest price for LPG cylinders was again recorded at 79 reals in Caçapava, a city in the state of São Paulo. The existence of such vast price differences within the same country indicates that average prices alone do not fully reflect the nationwide economic reality. ANP's weekly reports serve as a vital reference source for citizens to plan their budgets and for relevant regulatory authorities to maintain their oversight of the market.
