Brazilian High School Student to Represent Federal District in the Young Senator Program

As a result of an intense competition involving more than 230 thousand students studying in public schools from all corners of Brazil, a young student from Taguatinga achieved great success. Seventeen-year-old Calebe Fernandes Freire Varejão Gomes won the right to represent the Federal District (DF) in the 2026 Brezilya Genç Senatör ve Genç Senatör Programı. This significant achievement was attained thanks to the young student's skills and hard work at the Taguatinga Norte Ortaöğretim Merkezi (Cemtn). Winning the regional essay competition organized by the Senate, the young student seized this opportunity and is experiencing the pride of representing his country in the highest legislative body. Thus, Calebe managed to make a name for himself by placing in the country's largest school essay competition.

The event in which the selected students will participate will take place between August 17 and 21 in Brazil's capital, Brasília. During this special program called Legislative Experience Week, the youth will have the opportunity to closely examine how the Brazilian Legislative Branch operates. As part of the intensive five-day program, participants will personally attend discussions held in the parliament and experience the daily routine of the assembly. In addition, students will have the chance to present their own proposals in order to directly contribute to the legislative processes. The potential for these proposals to turn into actual legislative bills in the future makes the program extremely valuable for the youth.

In general, only a total of 27 students, exactly one student from each federal unit of Brazil, earn the right to participate in this program. This situation clearly reveals how selectif and challenging the elimination process of the competition is. Through this experience, the successful students are aimed to not only gain theoretical knowledge about the country's governance but also practically and experientially learn about democratic processes. This joyful news, announced on Saturday morning at the opening of the school's Olympics, became an unforgettable moment for both the teacher and the student. This victory continues to be a source of personal pride for teacher Érica, as this is her second successful student in a row. Previously, in 2024, she had also managed to train a student named Emanuelle Lana from the same school as the Federal District champion in the same competition. Making teaching her passion, teacher Érika was awarded the Medal of Appreciation by the Federal Bölge Yasama Meclisi (CLDF) this year for her consistent and outstanding work in the field of education.
