Former Umno leader Puad Zarkashi announces support for rival party candidate in Johor election

In developments that began in Johor Bahru and have caused repercussions in Malaysian politics, former Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi made an unexpected move. Puad Zarkashi announced his open support for Mohamad Yazid Bakri, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition's candidate for Rengit in the Johor state elections. This support was also visually confirmed through a campaign poster, drawing attention as a former party member backing a candidate from a rival bloc. Puad Zarkashi, an experienced politician who previously served as the Johor State Assembly Speaker and Rengit Member of Parliament, based his decision on personal reasons.

In a statement made on his own social media account, Puad Zarkashi stated that he is currently not a member of any official political party, arguing that he made his decision based on the personality and character of the candidate on the ground. In his announcement, he emphasized that he did not follow any party line, but trusted only the candidate's personality, and for this reason, he chose Mohamad Yazid Bakri, whom he referred to as 'Saudara Yazid'. This stance is considered an interesting divergence within the Malaysian political structure, which relies on strict party discipline, and it has begun to be discussed that it could change the political dynamics in the region.

Puad Zarkashi also listed the concrete reasons behind his decision to support in five points, highlighting the candidate's local ties such as being a native of Rengit, residing in the region, owning a home there, and being the president of the Rengit surau (mosque). The slogan used in the poster, 'Orang Rengit Jaga Rengit' (Rengit people protect Rengit), was based on the idea that someone from within the local community should be represented. This slogan was used strategically in the campaign to emphasize the candidate's local touch and organic bond with the voters, aiming to create a psychological effect on the local electorate.

Known throughout his political career as a staunch defender of Umno and a supporter of Barisan Nasional (BN), Puad Zarkashi had officially announced his resignation from the party on June 25. His resignation came shortly after he accused Johor Chief Minister and state BN chief Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi of not following procedures when announcing the dissolution of the state assembly and the early election decision. This intra-party tension also brought along allegations that the Umno secretary-general claimed Puad had threatened to leave the party if his son was not nominated for the Rengit seat.

Looking at his past election performance, Puad Zarkashi achieved a major victory by winning the Rengit seat with a majority of 1,920 votes in the 2022 Johor state elections. Puad, who received a total of 7,903 votes, had defeated the Perikatan Nasional (PN), Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), and Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) candidates at that time. However, he suffered a defeat against PKR candidate Mohd Idris Jusi in the 2013 general elections, and subsequently served as the Director-General of the Special Affairs Department (Jasa) between 2015-2018. Puad Zarkashi, whose political past is filled with experiences such as Deputy Education Minister and Prime Minister's Secretary-General in the upper echelons of the state, may be a key factor in determining the fate of the local elections with this new stance.
