Drug Shock in Floransa: All Substances from Cocaine to Ketamine on the Market

İtalya's Floransa city paints a worrying picture nationwide regarding drug use. According to the annual report prepared by the Bağımlılıkla Mücadele Departmanı and presented in Parlamento, a wide variety of substances such as cocaine, heroin, cannabis, and even fentanyl are circulating in the city. This situation has placed Floransa at the peak of frightening statistics on a national scale. The increase in substance use, especially among the youth, and the introduction of highly dangerous new drugs into the market deeply concern authorities. Across İtalya, it is reported that in 2025, 26 percent of students aged 15-19 have used drugs at least once in the past year.

Although cannabis has slightly lost its appeal compared to previous years, it remains the most commonly used substance, particularly among the young population. Cocaine stands out with its devastating effects on social and healthcare systems; in fact, one-third of overdose deaths and 32 percent of hospital admissions related to substance addiction nationwide are directly attributed to this substance. Meanwhile, the rapid market capture of new-generation drugs such as synthetic cathinones, opioids, hallucinogens, and ketamine is drawing attention. In 2025, a total of 92 different new substances were detected, paving the way for addicts to enter a dangerous trend of 'polydrug use' (poliutilizzo). The combination of alcohol consumption and psychiatric medications taken without a prescription with this multi-use puts individuals' health at much greater risk.

Looking at the Toskana region of İtalya, the dimensions of the health crisis caused by drug use become more apparent. In 2025, 800 emergency room visits related to drug use were recorded in the Toskana region alone. While this figure translates to 22 visits per 100,000 people, it is significantly above the national average of 14. While 1,041 individuals were admitted to treatment processes at therapy centers in the region, health support was provided to 10,475 people at regional clinics. This intense demand for healthcare services reveals how regional resources are being shifted toward the fields of combating drugs and rehabilitation.

Authorities resort to highly advanced scientific methods to determine the drug consumption dynamics and quantities in the city. In this context, daily PM10 air samples taken from sixteen different points in Floransa's Via del Ponte alle Mosse area are analyzed to examine consumption habits over the past 24 hours. The obtained air quality data places Floransa third in the country (after Roma and Pescara) in terms of cocaine concentration. Surprisingly, however, the city ranks first in all of İtalya for THC (the active component of cannabis) and ketamine concentrations. Nevertheless, authorities specifically emphasize that passive inhalation at this level does not pose any risk to human health and that the measured amount is well below a personal use dosage.

On the other hand, wastewater analysis stands out as one of the most powerful tools used to uncover hidden consumption in the city. Although a decreasing trend in heroin use is observed across İtalya, the second highest concentration of this substance was detected in Floransa's wastewater. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that has caused a major crisis in Amerika in recent years, is also among the substances investigated in Italian cities. Fentanyl has been detected in 34 different cities in İtalya, with the highest load of 0,68 milligrams recorded in Floransa. Upon the detection of these small amounts in the report, it is concluded that the presence of fentanyl in the city is primarily due to medical and therapeutic use, while recreational use remains extremely limited for now.
