Although the world of computing and electronics has continued to take massive strides for decades, there is one thing that remains unchanged: how frustrating printers can be. Their frequent freezing and malfunctioning, especially when it comes to wireless connections, is one of the biggest complaints among users. In addition, years of proprietary cartridge policies, software restrictions, and subscription-based ink systems have turned these devices into a nuisance for almost everyone. These restrictive strategies implemented by mainstream manufacturers continue to draw justified backlash from consumers. In short, while technology advances rapidly, printers seem to have been left behind in time, losing their user-friendly nature.

However, a French startup named Open Tools believes that a radically different and much better approach to printers is possible. In the past few hours, the company introduced the first working prototype of an inkjet printer called Open Printer, which is repairable, modifiable, and usable without resorting to the frustrating games of mainstream manufacturers. This open-source approach holds the potential to spark a new revolution in the hardware world. Open Tools' main goal is to ensure that users have full control over their own devices and to stand against planned obsolescence. The startup aims to bring transparency and freedom to hardware, much like the open-source movement in the software world.

The Open Printer project was actually announced a few months ago on the Crowd Supply crowdfunding platform. Along with a newly released video, the team successfully enabled the device to print its first page in both black-and-white and color. The brain of the device is a Raspberry Pi Zero W, supported by a custom microcontroller that manages the cartridges. The user interface consists of a small 1,47-inch TFT screen combined with a clickable wheel for navigating menus. Connectivity options include USB-C, USB-A, and Bluetooth, while the device's flexibility also stands out. Additionally, the ability to print on both traditional paper and paper rolls, thanks to an integrated cutter, significantly increases the device's practicality.

Such open-source hardware projects offer great freedoms to consumers, forming a strong alternative against existing monopolies in the industry. The repairable design of Open Printer extends the device's lifespan while also contributing to the reduction of electronic waste. Allowing users to modify the hardware according to their own needs enables the device to evolve from a simple printer into a versatile tool. Moreover, this system operating without software locks could allow users to utilize third-party cartridges or alternative inks. Considering all these features together, it is clear that the project is not just a printer, but also a call for fair and sustainable technology.

It remains to be seen what kind of commercial path Open Printer, currently in the prototype stage, will follow in the future. Whether the startup will mass-produce the device or how open it will remain to community contributions will become clear in the upcoming period. However, the interest shown by the open-source hardware community in such projects indicates that the future could be quite bright for Open Printer. Many technology enthusiasts around the world are waiting for such independent and transparent solutions to become widespread against the restrictive printer market. Ultimately, this French startup's project proves once again how innovative a user-centric approach to technology can be. If the project succeeds, it seems inevitable that the established and problematic order in the printer industry will be seriously shaken.
