ISIS Operation in Istanbul: Arrest Warrant for 19 Suspects

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated a comprehensive investigation to decipher and prevent the activities of the terrorist organization ISIS (DEAŞ). In the operations conducted within this scope, a large number of suspects, claimed to be linked to the organization, were identified and detained. A look at the details of the operation reveals that the structure of the organization and potential action preparations in Istanbul were deciphered, and action was taken based on intelligence obtained. As the investigations deepened, evidence regarding the suspects' roles within the organization and their activities was gathered, and judicial processes were launched.

After the procedures of the detained suspects at the police department were completed, the process of referring them to judicial authorities began. In the first stage, detention decisions were issued for 39 suspects, and they were brought to police units for questioning. The suspects' statements were taken at the police station, and concrete evidence regarding their contacts with the organization was examined. Following the examinations, it was announced that individuals were identified who were considered to be part of the upper structure of the organization or were preparing for actions. A file was prepared by the prosecutor's office with requests for judicial control and submitted to the court.

Along with the referral documents prepared by the prosecutor's office, 19 suspects, for whom an arrest warrant was sought among the 39 suspects, were referred to the Penal Court of Peace. The suspects were requested to be tried before the judge on various charges including membership in a terrorist organization, terrorist propaganda, and laundering assets arising from crime. The prosecutor's office requested the arrest of these 19 suspects due to strong suspicion of crime and the possibility of evidence being destroyed. Regarding the other suspects, it is expected that requests for release under judicial control conditions will come to the agenda.

This operation against the ISIS terrorist organization is of great importance as it once again demonstrates Turkey's determination in the fight against terrorism. Intelligence and police units conducted a joint study to prevent the organization from operating in a metropolis like Istanbul. The painful memory of past terrorist attacks makes it mandatory to carry out such operations frequently and with sensitivity. Officials stated that the aim is to dismantle networks providing financial and logistical support to terrorist organizations for the tranquility and security of the public. During this process, it was learned that wide-ranging examinations were carried out to prevent the organization's recruitment activities.

Following the completion of the court process, it will become clear whether the request for the arrest of the suspects will be accepted. The court will decide on the 19 suspects for whom arrest is requested, and depending on the evidence, the path of release or arrest will be followed. It is probable that the remaining 20 suspects will be released under judicial control conditions or their requests for trial without arrest will be met. In conclusion, it was emphasized that the operation in Istanbul aimed to deal a blow to the ISIS structure and that similar operations would continue. It is expected that new information will be shared with the public regarding the work carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Interior.
