7 Detentions in Major Smuggling Operation Spanning from İzmir to Yalova

As part of the investigation into contraband product trade, centered in İzmir and effective in many provinces, simultaneous operations created a shock effect. Under the coordination of Menemen Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and with meticulous work, security forces carried out simultaneous raids on determined addresses in İzmir, Mardin and Yalova provinces. In these operations, 7 suspects were detained on allegations of violating legal processes and unjustly reducing the state's customs revenues. After the completion of their procedures at the police department, the suspects were referred to the judicial authorities and were arrested and sent to prison. It was learned that the investigation was being deepened to determine if the operation was against an organized structure and to uncover other dimensions of the network.

Following the intelligence work and physical tracking by security forces regarding the issue, physical operations were launched in which raids were conducted on a total of 23 different points. A large-scale application was carried out with the support of İzmir Provincial Police Department Smuggling Crimes Branch teams as well as specialized teams within the Aliağa District Police Directorate. Detailed searches were conducted at 16 houses and 7 workplaces covering the living areas and commercial premises of the suspects. In these searches, contraband products that could risk public health and safety as well as disrupt economic balances were found. Teams continued the searches meticulously using narcotic dogs and technical devices in the operation areas.

While smuggled materials with notable quantities and varieties were seized during the searches at the addresses, a detail that increased the seriousness of the operation was the discovery of a weapon. A large number of mobile phones, thermoses, sunglasses, headphones and various electrical household appliances, ready to be released to the market as contraband, were seized. In addition, 1 unlicensed pistol found in the environments where the suspects were present was found and taken into custody by security forces. This situation revealed that the suspects could face heavier charges not only for smuggling activities but also for possession of a weapon. Work was initiated to determine the market value of the seized products and the material damage.

The 7 suspects detained within the scope of the investigation were referred to judicial authorities after their statements were taken at the police department and questioning was completed. The suspects, who were brought before the on-duty court, gave their statements in line with the evidence and accusations presented by the prosecution. As a result of the trial by the Penal Judgeship of Peace, a detention decision was made for all the suspects on the grounds of 'proof of crime', 'organized structure of the smuggling activity' and 'insufficiency of judicial control conditions'. The decision was evaluated by legal experts as an important step in the fight against organized crime gangs.

In statements made by the authorities regarding the issue, it was shared that the operation was not concluded at this stage and the investigation was continuing in a multi-faceted manner. Security units and the prosecution are working intensely to completely solve the starting point of the supply chain and the distribution network of the seized contraband products. The suspects' connections with other provinces and whether they have new collaborators are being investigated. In this context, it is emphasized that the operations may expand and more suspects may be involved. It was emphasized that similar operations would continue uninterruptedly to prevent smuggling and protect the state's customs revenues.
