23,000 buildings examined for earthquake risk map in İzmir Karşıyaka

İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi has completed the microzonation and building inventory study in the Karşıyaka district. A total of 23,000 buildings in 27 neighborhoods were examined one by one by the authorities. A risk map was created by determining the current condition of the buildings and their potential earthquake performance.

Not only surface structures but also underground data were analyzed in detail. As part of the study, drillings reaching 400 metres below ground were carried out. The data obtained from these drillings are of critical importance for understanding the soil structure of the region and how seismic waves will propagate.

This completed inventory study will help predict where and how much damage Karşıyaka will suffer in a potential earthquake. The collected data is expected to form the basis for planning and urban transformation decisions in the city's earthquake preparation process.
