Meta is testing continuous life recording with AI-powered smart glasses

Technology giant Meta has announced that it has begun testing next-generation smart glasses prototypes capable of continuously recording the daily routines of its users. According to this project, uncovered by Financial Times reporter Hannah Murphy, devices equipped with 'super sensing' technology automatically take photos seconds apart and continuously record ambient audio. The primary purpose of collecting this data is to enable users to retrospectively query their days and recall their memories or events they experienced with the help of artificial intelligence. Thus, the company's vision is built on creating a personal assistant with which people can digitally archive their lives. Although this developed prototype has the potential to create a new revolution in the wearable technology market, it also brings very serious debates.

The project in question has sparked intense privacy and confidentiality debates even within the company itself. Current Meta smart glasses are produced under a partnership with EssilorLuxottica, and the devices include an LED light on the frame that illuminates while recording to warn people around. However, the company's senior executives plan not to light this indicator when continuous monitoring and recording mode is active, a decision likely to trigger public backlash and regulatory investigations. The idea of uninterrupted recording without people's consent raises serious concerns about surveillance and state or corporate oversight. This internal approach also brings into question whether a technological advancement can be achieved at the expense of user privacy.

It is known that Meta is conducting comprehensive internal discussions regarding its data processing methods in order to mitigate potential blows to privacy laws. One of the proposed agendas is that raw images and audio recordings collected by cameras and microphones should not be stored on company servers, and that even the users themselves should not be able to access this data. Instead, the system is intended to extract only the 'metadata' from these media files to send to the cloud, allowing the artificial intelligence to answer user questions using this summarized data. Although this method claims to prevent major data breaches that could occur during the archiving process, how the data is processed remains uncertain. Experts emphasize that the defense of deleting raw data may not be a sufficient shield to protect users in the event of malicious software or system failures.

In addition, it is stated that the company intends to use the resulting residual data to train its own large language models. Wanting to get ahead in the fierce artificial intelligence competition in the tech world, Meta plans to evaluate this data to gain an advantage against its rivals such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. While the massive amount of real-time data collected from daily life offers the potential to incredibly improve the company's algorithms, it also paves the way for ethical boundaries to be crossed. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that these AI-integrated glasses will become the primary device interface to replace smartphones in the near future. As part of this strategy, the company has reduced its investments in the virtual reality and metaverse ecosystem, focusing more on wearable technologies by acquiring a recording device manufacturer named Limitless in the past few months.

Legal experts and digital rights advocates point out that such continuous recording devices directly contradict biometric data protection and anti-wiretapping regulations both in the United States and globally. In many states across America, recording someone else's voice without the explicit consent of all relevant parties constitutes a crime, while this new technology integrated into glasses creates a legal gray area. Commentators argue that urgent and comprehensive legal regulations are needed to adapt to this new reality created by all-seeing and all-hearing devices. Meta officials, making statements on the matter, refused to comment on this leaked project, stating only that it is in the prototype phase. Company spokespersons claim that privacy is centered from the very beginning in their product development processes, trying to allay the concerns created by the debates.
