2 People Lost Their Lives in the Severe Flood Disaster Striking Nigeria's Akwa Ibom State

Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom state located in southern Nigeria, and its surrounding areas were shaken by a major flood disaster caused by heavy rains that lasted for two days. As the rains started early on Thursday and maintained their intensity until Friday, drainage channels in the region overflowed. According to initial information obtained from the scene, at least two people lost their lives after being swept away by floodwaters on Nkemba Street. While houses and businesses were submerged underwater, causing great panic among local residents, there are concerns that the death toll may rise. Authorities warned the local public against sudden flash floods, while emergency response teams were mobilized to intervene in the situation.
The floodwaters practically paralyzed daily life and the transportation network in the region. Numerous main arteries and residential areas, such as Abak Road, Nkemba, Ukana Offot, Obio Offot, Use Offot, Udoette, Ebong Esien, Port Harcourt Street, and Tabernacle Road, were submerged underwater. This situation caused intercity and intracity traffic to come to a complete halt, leaving many vehicles stranded on the roads. As the waters rose, many houses were inundated, and local residents were forced to abandon their homes to save their lives. Additionally, significant material damage occurred as many structures, including the palace of a local traditional leader in the Port Harcourt Street area of Uyo, were submerged.
The scale of the disaster was not limited to residential areas and roads; religious and commercial organizations were also severely affected by the flood. A church building located on Abak Road, which hosts the Uyo branch of the Church of Christ, was completely submerged, and the congregation had to be evacuated to safe areas. Furthermore, Mechanics Village, one of the region's well-known and crowded commercial centers, also fell victim to the flood. Tradesmen suffered major financial losses due to the waters flooding their shops. Meanwhile, meteorological events such as storms and severe winds caused serious damage to buildings and agricultural lands in the Eket Local Government Area, particularly in the Okon community, negatively affecting the local economy.
As local residents' patience wore thin, protests broke out against the local government's indifference in the Tabernacle Road and Ikot Ekpene Road sections. Demonstrators claimed that the flood problem in the region worsens with each passing year due to the failure to promptly complete the ongoing 2.2-kilometer road project and the lack of proper drainage systems. Udo John Udobot, a tradesman from Mechanics Village, expressed his frustration by stating that they were promised a relocation to a new and safe area years ago, but no steps were taken in this regard. Udobot demanded that authorities be urgently called to duty, noting that not only the floodwaters but also thieves entering shops during the rainfall caused them significant harm.
Following this social and economic devastation, the Akwa Ibom State Government initiated an emergency response process by the direct order of Governor Umo Eno. All relevant institutions, including the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, and the Akwa Ibom State Waste Management and Environmental Protection Agency (AKSEPWMA), were directed to the affected areas. Emergency teams worked intensively, particularly along the Abak Road and Nkemba Street corridors where two people lost their lives, to clear blocked drainage channels and clean the roads. As a result of the intensive efforts of security and rescue teams, one lane of Abak Road, which had been closed to traffic, was temporarily reopened, and demolition and repair works for the drainage of floodwaters are continuing uninterrupted.
