Euthanasia Debates: When Palliative Care Falls Short, What Should Step In?

Moreover, it is not only physical pain; deep psychological distress such as the feeling of loss of control when approaching death, the worry of being a burden on the family, and the fear of losing their dignity also strain the patients. Even though palliative care aims to alleviate this multidimensional suffering, it is evident that the current infrastructure and practices are unfortunately far from meeting this need.

At the center of the debate lies the incredible difficulty in accessing palliative care beds. Many terminal patients are forced to wait for admission to these special care units to spend the last days of their lives in peace. However, because the demand exponentially exceeds the supply, many of those in need pass away without being able to benefit from these facilities. The capacity of the current system is absolutely inadequate to cope with the needs of a growing and aging population. In this context, officials using palliative care as a shield against euthanasia creates a situation that further exacerbates the desperation of patients with unresolved pain.

The fundamental motive behind people's demand for the right to die is the individual's autonomy over their own destiny, beyond hopeless suffering. Although opponents of euthanasia generally claim that improving medical standards will eliminate this demand, this approach relegates patient autonomy to the background. A patient must have the right to make the decision to end their own life at a point where all medical interventions have failed or they are experiencing incredible pain during the terminal process. Instead of adopting a prohibitionist approach, states need to regulate this sensitive issue with strict legal, psychological, and medical oversight mechanisms. Completely ignoring the patients' right to make decisions about their own bodies is also contrary to the fundamental humanitarian principles of modern medicine and law.

In summary, officials rejecting euthanasia with a single sentence by putting forward palliative care means ignoring the dimensions of the current crisis. Acknowledging the capacity deficiencies in the healthcare system and understanding the real experiences of patients are essential for these discussions to proceed more healthily. As a society, a more in-depth, taboo-free, and transparent discussion environment regarding the concepts of death and dying must be created. In this way, neither the importance of palliative care is belittled, nor are the legitimate demands of desperate patients regarding their own futures ignored. Ultimately, the goal is to establish a comprehensive system that ensures individuals can say goodbye without pain and with their dignity preserved in the final stage of life.
