Two Farmers in the Vehicle that Fell into an 800-Meter Ravine in Peru Lost Their Lives

In the tragic accident that occurred in the rural community of Capcas, dependent on the Colcabamba district of Peru's Tayacaja province, two farmers lost their lives. In the early morning hours, 71-year-old Celestino Quinto Anaya and 59-year-old Marcelino García Aliaga lost their lives as a result of a vehicle called a motokarga rolling down an approximately 800-meter-deep ravine. It was determined that the accident occurred around 05.30 in the morning. The farmers were returning home after shopping in the Colcabamba district. Teams dispatched to the region after the accident determined that both individuals found in the vehicle had lost their lives. The crime scene investigation revealed that the vehicle was found completely wrecked at the bottom of the ravine.
It was learned that during the accident, Celestino Quinto had his neighbor Marcelino Garcia transported with his Sheng-Wey brand motokarga with license plate 5748-SB. Authorities believe the accident likely occurred as a result of a mechanical failure in the vehicle. The vehicle went off the road, lost control, and was thrown into the deep ravine. Police teams have launched a comprehensive investigation to shed light on the incident. According to initial findings, the possibility that the driver lost steering control due to a mechanical problem is being considered. The fact that roads in such rural areas are narrow and dangerous is considered among the factors that could have worsened the accident.
The incident came to light when Celestino Quinto's wife became worried after her husband failed to return home. Noticing the situation, the woman initiated a search on her own to find her husband. As a result of the searches conducted around 09.00 in the morning, the motokarga was found completely shattered at the bottom of the ravine. Following this gruesome discovery, security forces and health teams in the region were immediately dispatched to the scene. Teams affiliated with the Colcabamba Municipality Security Directorate quickly reached the area to respond to the accident at the 39th kilometer of the road. The lifeless bodies of both farmers were found a very short distance away from the vehicle.
Following the accident, Claudia Suclupe Villafane, a doctor at the Colcabamba Health Center who arrived in the area, officially confirmed the deaths of both farmers. Peru National Police teams took the bodies from the scene and transferred them to the Colcabamba Police Station for necessary procedures. After the initial procedures were completed here, the bodies were sent to the Huancayo Forensic Medicine Institution Morgue to undergo a legal autopsy. It was stated that these procedures are of critical importance in determining the exact causes of the accident and the manner of death. Families will not be able to receive the bodies until the legal process is completed.
This tragic event has once again brought to the agenda the chronic problems regarding transportation and road safety in the mountainous rural areas of Peru. It is observed that people working in the agricultural sector and making their living take vital risks every day in such challenging terrain conditions. The safety standards and mechanical maintenance of these motorized vehicles used by the local population for transportation are of great importance. Following the accident, local residents called on authorities to conduct more frequent inspections and take necessary precautions on these dangerous roads. While the families and loved ones of the two deceased farmers mourn deeply during these difficult days, attention has been drawn to rural transportation safety across Peru.
