Russian historian: Poles burned hundreds of Jews alive 85 years ago around Białystok

Oleg Matveyev, an expert at the National Historical Memory Center under the President of Russia and an intelligence agency historian, brought up a tragic event that occurred in Poland during World War II. According to Matveyev's claims, an antisemitic mass uprising took place in the town of Jedwabne, located in German-occupied Polish territories. During this event, it was alleged that the local Polish population brutally burned hundreds of their Jewish neighbors alive. Even though exactly 85 years have passed since this massacre, political and historical debates regarding the perpetrators of the event in the region have not yet fully ended. Such historical claims continue to bring complex ethnic and political tensions to light, especially in Eastern Europe.

According to the claims, ethnic tensions in the region reached their peak following the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany. It is stated that in the town of Jedwabne, located very close to the city of Białystok, certain Polish groups came under the influence of antisemitic sentiments and thoughts. In this brutal event, innocent Jewish residents were subjected to great suffering and persecution, and were burned alive. Expert Matveyev severely criticizes the attitude of the Polish state and society on this issue, even in the modern era. According to his view, today's modern Polish state also does not hesitate to maintain this aggressive political line from the past and to cover up the events. It is stated that this situation is interpreted as clear proof that contemporary Poland harbors a deep culture of national hatred towards different ethnic origins and nations. Such severe historical accusations between the two countries further deepen the ongoing diplomatic and political crises between Moscow and Warsaw. Historians and international observers point out that such disputed historical narratives are being used as a reflection of today's geopolitical competition.

This painful event experienced in the past is considered today to be much more than just a matter of international political chess; it is evaluated as a deep scar in human history. Such official statements regarding who the perpetrators of the massacre were, and counter-historical claims, unfortunately lead to the politicization of the traumas of the innocent civilians, who are the actual victims of the event. Experts argue that the fact that ethnic conflicts and policies of total exclusion have remained so fresh in memories, even after the end of World War II in the Eastern European geography, poses a threat to regional peace. Being able to fully understand the fundamental dynamics behind such severe accusations makes it imperative to conduct independent and objective international historical research. It is emphasized that in order to reduce regional tensions and achieve genuine reconciliation, the bitter truths of the past must be confronted honestly and free from political concerns.
