San Ginesio's Historic Palio Festival Begins: Cortege and Competitions Among Four Districts

The San Ginesio Palio festival in the city of San Ginesio, Italy, coinciding with the hottest days of summer, enters a deeper phase with two important events that combine historical memory, public participation, and competitive spirit. Following the horse selection tomorrow morning, the 'Giostra dell'Anello' (Ring Race) will be run, which is considered the first equestrian contest of the 2026 Palio events. The second and most established leg of the festival will be the 55th 'Palio della Pacca' race, and these events will set the stage for a competition for the city's pride between the four historic districts: Porta Alvaneto, Porta Ascarana, Porta Offuna, and Porta Picena.

Looking at the details of the process starting tomorrow morning, the selections of the riders representing each district will be held in four separate groups, and this stage is of great strategic importance. For Porta Ascarana district Francesco Matticari, Alessio Pizzi, and Jacopo Matticari; for Porta Picena Mattia Ambrosi, Luca Passamonti, and Davide Dimarti; for Porta Offuna Lorenzo Mariotti, Daniele Leri, and Alessio Ricchiuti; and for Porta Alvaneto Lorenzo Fantinelli, Matteo Rivola, and Manuel Gessani will compete. In these elimination rounds, the rider who finishes first in each group will earn the right to wear their district's colors in the main final race held in the afternoon, raising the inter-district rivalry to the highest level.

The race track was officially opened at the Sant'Agostino auditorium, right in front of the Pala di Sant'Andrea, the city's cultural memory, and this place establishes a historical connection with the memories of the Battle of Fornarina. At this meeting, the ceremonial drappo (flag) specially prepared for the Giostra dell'Anello, designed by Siena artist Rita Rossella Ciani and selected through the Associazione Tradizioni Sanginesine association's competition, was also introduced. At the same time, San Ginesio's new historical stendardo was presented to the public for the first time, exhibited as a symbol of the city's identity extending from the past to the present.

The excitement of the festival will continue with various cultural events leading up to the grand final on 15 Ağustos, and the drappo of the Palio della Pacca designed by Paola Imposimato will be introduced on 10 Ağustos. Within the program, a 'medieval dinner with murder' themed dinner will be held on 12 Ağustos, while the popular 'taverna' event, where people come together and strengthen solidarity, will take place on 13 and 14 Ağustos. On 15 Ağustos, after the Palio della Pacca is staged in its most traditional form with the participation of horse riders, a festive final will be made with the Mortimer Mc Grave band giving a concert.

This comprehensive series of events emerges as a product of the long-term efforts of the Associazione Tradizioni Sanginesine association, which has been active for more than 60 years with the aim of preserving San Ginesio's historical and cultural heritage.
