Warning from Thai Police: Cannabis Smugglers Face Severe Penalties

The Thai Police Organization has warned both locals and foreign tourists, drawing attention to the increasing cannabis smuggling incidents recently. Authorities emphasized that smuggling cannabis or cannabis-containing products from Thailand abroad constitutes a serious crime. Deputy Police Spokesperson Police Major General Jaturaporn Piromkaew shared three major cannabis seizure cases that took place in Hong Kong, Endonezya, and Polonya with the public. These incidents revealed how widespread smuggling networks are and that they have reached an international scale. Authorities stated that tourists should not get involved in such activities, otherwise they would face very severe legal sanctions.

In the first of the announced incidents, Hong Kong Customs officials seized approximately 23 kilograms of dried cannabis in the belongings of passengers arriving from Thailand. In this operation, two suspects of Chinese and Hong Kong nationality were arrested and subjected to legal proceedings. In the second incident, the Endonezya National Narcotics Agency (BNN) tracked down a network smuggling high-quality cannabis originating from Thailand and seized a total of 3.37 tons of cannabis. It was stated that suspects of Malezya and Chinese nationality were also being sought within the scope of this criminal network. The third case took place in Polonya; authorities seized 1.2 tons of cannabis sent from Thailand in containers hidden inside bricks and detained 8 suspects.

The partial legalization of cannabis for medical use in Tayland leads many people to the misconception that exporting this plant abroad is also legal. However, authorities unequivocally reiterated that taking cannabis out of the country is still very strictly controlled and is illegal. In this context, it was reported that those who smuggle cannabis could be punished with up to 10 years in prison or a fine of four times the value of the goods under the Tayland Customs Act. Additionally, according to the Traditional Thai Medicine Act and the relevant regulations of the Ministry of Health, a prison sentence of up to one year and a fine of up to 20,000 Baht can be imposed. Authorities added that these laws are only valid within Tayland, and the criminal laws of the target countries pose a separate danger.

The main source of concern is that cannabis is still classified as a first-class drug in many countries around the world and in neighboring countries, making it subject to extremely strict legal sanctions. The Thai police stated that individuals who smuggle cannabis will be subject to the laws of the countries they travel to, and that these penalties can range from imprisonment to the death penalty. Therefore, a warning was issued that even small favors, such as carrying someone else's luggage, could ruin a person's life. Citizens and tourists were strongly urged not to accept assignments to carry packages abroad from people they do not know or from individuals offering jobs over the internet. Authorities reminded that behind such non-transparent and suspicious offers, there could be international criminal organizations.

Among the prevention methods, it is of great importance for individuals to check their own luggage in detail; because cannabis-containing scents, teas, snacks, or cosmetics can unknowingly lead to legal problems. The fact that criminal organizations that make money through volunteer couriers can threaten or physically harm individuals, in addition to deceiving them, was also discussed. The police recommended that if any suspicious activity, anomaly, or online job offer is noticed, a report should be made immediately to the 191 and 1599 emergency hotlines. It was emphasized that these reporting hotlines are active 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and that authorities are working resolutely to dismantle these criminal networks. Consequently, Thai authorities once again reaffirmed that it is necessary to stay away from all activities related to cannabis smuggling.
