Harsh Reaction from TİP Leader Erkan Baş to Detentions During NATO Protests

Erkan Baş, General Chairman of the Türkiye İşçi Partisi (TİP), reacted harshly to the situation of those detained in the context of recent NATO protests. Baş criticized the detention of at least 17 people, including his party's Ankara Provincial Chairman Fırat Çoban, Çankaya District Chairman Ilgın Baran Öcal, and Ankara Provincial Youth Officer Oğulcan Boz, who have been kept in custody for three days. Calling on authorities and the public to be sensitive to the issue, Baş emphasized that such attitudes are worrying in terms of Türkiye's democratic standards. He stated that the extension of detention periods must be questioned both legally and on human grounds.

At the center of the incidents are the detentions that took place during a protest organized regarding NATO. In the operations conducted by security forces, many demonstrators and activists were detained. Among these individuals are local administrators and youth branch members serving in various echelons of the TİP. It was learned that the interrogation procedures of the total 17 detained individuals are ongoing and they have not been released for three days. The situation is being closely monitored by party officials and families.

In his statement, Erkan Baş stated that he found the attitude of the government and law enforcement towards the protesters excessive. Baş, arguing that in a democratic country keeping citizens who express their opinions in detention for days is unacceptable, stated that this approach would also disrupt social peace. Furthermore, Baş claimed that censorship and pressure policies have increased, saying that this course must be changed. With these messages he brought to the agenda through his social media accounts and press statements, he demanded that the rule of law be ensured.

The TİP administration has initiated legal processes for its detained members and other demonstrators. Party lawyers applied to courthouses and police stations to meet with the individuals in custody and to ensure their rights are protected during the process. Additionally, various press statements were organized at the party headquarters and in Ankara to protest the detentions. TİP officials suggested that such incidents are being escalated to create political discomfort, calling for the immediate release of their members. They stated that they will follow the situation closely and may resort to broader actions if necessary. The incident has reignited a debate in Türkiye regarding how protests against NATO and the legal/state intervention against these protests are received. The balance between freedom of expression and security concerns has once again been brought to the public agenda. Many political parties and civil society organizations called for the protection of the right to democratic demonstration. On the other hand, authorities insist that legal action will be taken when necessary to ensure public order.
