Trump's Renovation Efforts Are Problematic: Lincoln Memorial Pool Being Emptied Again

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovation project, initiated by US President Donald Trump and planned to be completed by July 4, the 250th founding anniversary of the country, is being emptied again due to a series of problems. President Trump initially claimed that this renovation would last for a century. However, only a few weeks after the project's completion last month, the pool experienced an intense algae bloom, and the newly laid floor covering began to peel from the base. These disruptions have seriously derailed the president's goal of meeting the announced schedule. Officials have now decided to completely empty the pool to start a new maintenance process both to repair these damages and to clean up the waste left over from the July 4 celebrations.

A debate is taking place between the Trump administration and critics regarding the cause of the peeling problems. While President Trump blames vandals for the damage to the coating, opponents argue that the situation actually stems from rushed and sloppy repair work. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum stated in an interview with conservative podcast host Katie Miller that this new draining operation was planned. Burgum also drew attention to the possibility of finding waste in the pool left over from the extensive Independence Day fireworks display held over the National Mall. The official stated that the water will be drained, the waste will be cleaned, and then the damage will be repaired and the pool will be refilled.

Former Olympic canoeist David Hearn is also being tried in connection with the damage to the pool. Hearn pleaded not guilty in Washington D.C. Superior Court to a charge of knowingly damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. According to his defense, Hearn reached inside to examine the peeled insulation in the pool and dropped the piece he was holding upon a park ranger's warning. His lawyers and other figures criticizing the Trump administration describe this case as an abuse of prosecutorial discretion, suggesting that Hearn is being made a scapegoat for the pool's poor renovation. According to court records, at least three more people accused of scraping the pool's paint are being tried for misdemeanor charges in the same court, and these suspects also pleaded not guilty in their initial hearings.

The repair of the pool is just one part of President Trump's broader and controversial infrastructure projects across the capital. Trump had the East Wing of the White House demolished to build a 400 million dollar ballroom and plans to construct a massive arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. In this context, regarding the Reflecting Pool project, Trump announced the renovation processes this spring and had the base painted a color he personally described as 'American flag blue'. In May, he displayed great confidence on social media by claiming that the project would be completed before July 4 and that they were even ahead of schedule. However, the problems that began shortly after the initial work was completed revealed that these ambitious promises were in vain.

On the other hand, the financial dimension and bidding procedures of the repair processes have also become one of the focal points of political tension. Secretary of the Interior Burgum argued that the Trump administration will not open new bids for the new repair rounds and will continue with the previous company because they believe they 'did a great job.' While an Ohio-based company named Green Water Solutions was given a 1.7 million dollar contract to install a water purification system in the pool, a Virginia-based firm named Atlantic Industrial Coatings won a 14.7 million dollar bid for repainting the floor and waterproofing. Democratic senators and House of Representatives members have launched an investigation to examine the project's details and how taxpayers' funds are being used. These developments show that the political and economic costs of the holiday preparations in the capital have now drawn the attention of Congress.
