Will Artificial Intelligence Take Our Jobs, or Will It Create New Opportunities?

Throughout the history of technology, every new invention has triggered the fear of unemployment in people's eyes. During the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century, mechanized looms caused concern among workers in England that their livelihoods would be depleted. With the entry of computers into office life in the twentieth century, it was predicted that millions of jobs would disappear. Similar concerns were intensely experienced during the widespread adoption of the internet. However, historical reality shows that technology not only destroys jobs but also changes the nature of the labor market, paving the way for new economies and employment areas. Artificial intelligence is not only the latest link in this historical chain, but also the most powerful of all created to date.

Today's artificial intelligence concerns are much deeper and more complex than previous technological transformations. The main reason for this is that this technology automates not only jobs requiring physical strength but also abilities belonging to the human brain. Thinking, analyzing, writing text, design, translation, programming, and even some decision-making processes can now be successfully carried out by artificial intelligence. This situation paints a picture that justifies the fears that millions of people will lose their jobs. However, reality is not one-dimensional; while artificial intelligence transforms old jobs on one hand, it creates entirely new doors of opportunity and professions on the other.

The 2025 Future of Jobs Report by the World Economic Forum reveals the numerical dimension of this massive transformation. According to the report, by 2030, technological change will cause approximately 92 million existing jobs to disappear or undergo radical changes globally. However, during the same period, 170 million new employment opportunities will emerge in new AI-supported fields. According to this clear calculation, it is expected that approximately 78 million new jobs will be added globally. Based on these data, the main issue is not job loss, but rather that people are not ready for these new and changing types of jobs. Therefore, it is imperative to launch a mass skill-building mobilization for the new generation workforce.

Analyses by global organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the consulting firm McKinsey also carry a similar parallelism. According to the IMF's warnings, about 40 percent of jobs in the world will undergo some form of change due to the impact of artificial intelligence, and this rate will reach much higher levels in developed economies. Nevertheless, IMF manager Kristalina Georgieva emphasizes that artificial intelligence will increase people's productivity rather than directly cutting jobs. The market value of professionals who learn to use technology effectively and competently will gradually increase. McKinsey research also confirms that a significant portion of employees will need to undergo retraining to update their skills in the next decade.

This global technological wave means both a great opportunity and a serious test for developing countries with young populations, such as Bangladesh. The transformation of the young population, which constitutes the economic power of the country, into a demographic advantage is only possible if the skills of this group are integrated into the future's technology-driven labor market. Otherwise, youth unemployment and associated social unrest could pose a risk. It is true that artificial intelligence will eliminate repetitive jobs such as data entry, basic accounting, or routine reporting; however, it is also rapidly growing innovative professions such as data labeling, machine learning expertise, and cybersecurity. Those who benefit the most will be the ones who embrace technology as a powerful assistant rather than seeing it as a rival, and who restructure their education systems accordingly with a focus on analysis, creativity, and problem-solving.
