How Did American Capital Take Over the Premier League?

Malcolm Glazer's purchase of Manchester United in 2005, making him the first American to own a Premier League club, heralded a major transformation in English football. As of today, heading into the 2025-26 season, 13 of the 20 clubs in the league have American capital in their shareholder structure. Approximately half of the clubs are controlled by American individuals, families, or private equity groups. This clearly demonstrates that the top tier of English football has now become one of the most attractive assets for American sports investors. This transatlantic capital influx has not only changed the boards of directors of the clubs but also completely reshaped the commercial aspect of the sport.

Figures running massive American sports empires, such as Stan Kroenke, who controls Arsenal, and Fenway Sports Group, who owns Liverpool, are now integral parts of English football. In recent years, large-scale deals such as Todd Boehly's purchase of Chelsea for £4.25 billion and Dan Friedkin's takeover of Everton prove that this trend is rapidly increasing. Furthermore, clubs like Aston Villa, co-owned by Wes Edens, and Bournemouth, taken over by Bill Foley, are also significant pieces of this big picture. The top league of English football has become the new target for massive funds and globally powerful investors from across the Atlantic. All these developments reveal that the power of American capital in English football has ceased to be a temporary trend and has transformed into a permanent structure.

There are very clear economic reasons behind why American investors are showing so much interest in English football. Because major leagues in the USA, such as the NFL, NBA, and MLB, operate as closed systems, adding a new team or buying an existing one is extremely difficult and requires massive costs. In contrast, English football has a global audience, an open league system, and club valuations that still appear quite reasonable by American standards. For example, the fact that the value of Newcastle United is even less than that of the Columbus Blue Jackets, the lowest-valued team in the NHL, creates a huge opportunity area in the eyes of investors. American businesspeople believe that by operating these relatively low valuations with their own commercial models, they can achieve massive profits.

However, this intense influx of American capital has not been warmly welcomed by English football fans. The arrival of American club owners has generally come with sharp increases in ticket prices and business models focused on commercial revenue. Supporters' groups of giant clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Everton have organized major protests against this situation in the last two seasons. One of the moments when fans' anger peaked was the European Super League initiative in 2021; because most American-owned clubs tried to launch this closed and elitist tournament despite all fan backlash and government warnings. While billions of dollars circulate in English football, the fact that lower leagues and local clubs still suffer serious financial difficulties further fuels this anger.

These commercial and social debates have ultimately pushed the UK government to take direct action. Along with the 2025 Football Governance Act, which received Royal Assent in July 2025, an Independent Football Regulator with powers over the top five tiers of English men's football has been established. This new regulation introduces a much stricter ownership test where the source and sufficiency of funds are thoroughly examined for prospective club owners. Additionally, rules have come into effect mandating that every club must hold an operating license compliant with this new system in order to compete. All these legal regulations are considered historic and decisive steps taken to prevent the unchecked commercialization of English football and to protect the rights of the fans.
