Andy as I Know Him: Burnham's Political Journey Dedicated to Justice and Ordinary People

I can proudly say that for twenty years I have known Andy Burnham closely and that during this time a strong bond of friendship has formed between us. I have had the opportunity to observe him many times while serving in government, outside of government, leading the process of empowering local governments, and under the most severe pressure. In the early days of our acquaintance, I was serving as the Lord Mayor of the city during that unforgettable year when Liverpool shone on the international stage by being selected as the European Capital of Culture in 2008. During that period, our paths crossed at various events because Andy was serving as the Culture Secretary, but he was not overly talkative. As he later confessed, thinking that the Liberal Democrats held sway in the council, he had assumed I was one of them.

As our friendship progressed, I realized that aside from our passionate devotion to football, our perspectives on life largely overlapped. I had seen how extremely sensitive Andy was toward the callous attitude displayed by the government regarding the Hillsborough disaster. However, when I invited him to speak at the 20. anniversary memorial of the disaster at Anfield, he had not fully grasped what he was getting himself into. The single chant of "we want justice" rising from the massive crowd of 37.000 people during his speech at the Kop stand that day may have been etched into everyone's memory. But the real story of that day lay not in the words Andy spoke, but in the action he displayed.

He cut his speech short and patiently listened to the families who had been trying to make their voices heard for twenty years to uncover the truth. He heard with his own ears the anger, the profound disappointment, and the determination of the families. Most importantly, he realized that Hillsborough was a much bigger issue that transcended football loyalties; it was the fact that for two decades the entire city had been crying out against the injustice they faced, yet no one was listening to them. This situation was a bitter consequence of powerful institutions ignoring ordinary people to protect only their own interests. This profound experience was etched into Andy's mind, and looking back today, we can see the traces of this event at the core of many of his policies in subsequent periods.

Years later, this awareness culminated in his initiative to pass a Hillsborough Law to prevent other families from having to wage similar struggles for justice. One point where people are often mistaken about Andy is confusing the strong determination and desire for success within him with simple political ambition. Of course, like any successful politician, he has certain ambitions, but what motivates him is never climbing the ladder to a position. The fundamental emotion that drives him into action is very plain: the desire to do something against the injustices he witnesses. This structural characteristic can sometimes make him a difficult person for others; when he believes in something, he can be stubborn, uncompromising, and results-oriented.

Despite everything, for families seeking justice and communities feeling ignored, his determination constitutes a source of trust. When we both left our roles in Westminster in 2017 to become the mayors of regions like Manchester and Liverpool, some had belittled our goal of building a different kind of politics for cities left outside the central system. Especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, in those tense moments he experienced with Westminster where it was expected that regions outside London should settle for less support, everyone knew exactly where he would stand. When the camera lights turn off, he is an extremely "normal" and honest person who deeply values thinking, questioning, and listening to people, just as Jürgen Klopp describes himself.
