50th Anniversary of Martyr Bishop Angelelli of the Military Dictatorship in Arjantin

The La Rioja region of Arjantin is in deep mourning on the 50th anniversary of the murder of Bishop Enrique Angelelli, who lost his life during the military dictatorship, and his companions. The bloody military coup in 1976 initiated not only a political transformation in the country but also a systematic era of terror directed against civilians and clergy. Angelelli was a courageous clergyman who defended social justice, known particularly for standing by the poor and the oppressed. The legacy left by him and the other martyrs continues to serve as a symbol of the struggle for human rights and dignity in Arjantin society today. These commemorative events hold great importance in ensuring that the dark past is not forgotten and that history does not repeat itself.

It is known that Bishop Angelelli was encouraged by Pope VI. Paolo during his "ad limina" visit to Roma in october of 1974. The Pope had recommended that he continue his pastoral work and take steps of mercy to alleviate social unrest. However, after the junta led by Jorge Rafael Videla seized power in 1976, the pressures on Angelelli and his team openly turned into violence. In the post-coup process, many priests were arrested, pastoral activities were hindered, and pressure on the church increased. In this environment, Angelelli never hesitated to stand by his people, continuing to raise his voice against the injustices of the dictatorship.

On 4 Ağustos 1976, Bishop Angelelli lost his life in a fatal traffic accident near Punta de los Llanos. Although this accident was attempted to be shown as an accident at the time, the truths that emerged years later revealed a much darker picture. Because Angelelli had officiated the funeral ceremonies of Priest Carlos Murias and Priest Gabriele Longueville, who were also killed by the dictatorship just a few days before his death. In 2014, an Arjantin criminal court officially ruled that this traffic accident was, in fact, an assassination planned and deliberately orchestrated by the military junta. This decision was evaluated as a critical step in terms of the restitution of the rights of the victims in history and the establishment of justice.

The period between 1976 and 1983 in Arjantin, referred to by the regime as the "National Reorganization Process," is considered the darkest era in the country. Under the guise of an effort to establish order, as a result of the terror policies implemented by the junta, 30 thousand people were made to "disappear" (desaparecidos). Thousands of dissidents, unionists, intellectuals, and students were subjected to torture in secret detention centers and their traces were erased never to return. One of the most brutal practices of the regime was the illegal removal of the children of political prisoners from their families and giving them to other families. In addition, the "Death Flights," where detainees were thrown into the ocean from military planes and their lifeless bodies disappeared, constitute one of the biggest pages of shame of this inhumane period.

Dante Braida, the current bishop of La Rioja, drew attention to the spiritual importance of this commemoration in a statement he made to the Vatican's Fides news agency. Braida emphasized that the memory of the martyrs, including Angelelli as well as Murias, Longueville, and Wenceslao Pedernera, is a source of life and teaching for today's generations. He stated that the compassion these clergymen showed, especially to those most in need, should be remembered as a unifying force in today's individualistic societies. Braida expressed that people can build a more inclusive and hopeful future by empathizing with each other, and that these martyrs inspire this common march. Even though 50 years have passed since the pains of the past, such commemorations in Arjantin undertake a vital mission in keeping the truths alive, strengthening the culture of living together, and protecting the common values of humanity.
