Criticism of the State from Neighborhood Leaders in Arjantin: 'They Are Completely Absent in Mental Health'

Neighborhood representatives operating in the city of Río Gallegos, located in the Santa Cruz province of Arjantin, stated that the state is in a serious state of helplessness and absence regarding mental health and public safety. Claudio Anaquin and Sandra Saldivia, known leaders of the 499 and Public Services area, announced that they have made initiatives before the local authorities and the provincial Ministry of Security. The authorities emphasized that preventive police patrols in their areas have decreased significantly and that the main reason for this is the salary and personnel rights issues experienced by police officers. This situation causes a security vulnerability, especially in the peripheral neighborhoods of the city, while steadily increasing public unrest. Speaking on a program broadcast on Tiempo FM 97.5 radio, the leaders stated that they are deeply concerned about the indifference of the authorized institutions to these ongoing problems for years.

One of the most critical issues underlined by the community leaders was the growing mental health crisis and the state's massive neglect in this area. According to neighborhood spokespersons, current economic hardships and social instability directly and negatively affect the mental health of both the general public and security forces. People are experiencing severe psychological depressions not only due to pre-existing illnesses but also due to intense life stresses, poverty, and uncertainty. Sandra Saldivia stated that they encounter suicide cases every day, including the recent suicide of a police officer, and that the state does not even have a place in this bitter picture. These tragic events reveal the loneliness of the local people and the need for urgent psychosocial support.

Touching upon the quality of mental health services, the leaders praised the dedication and professionalism of the professionals working in the field. However, they also shamefully revealed the fact that these professionals are deprived of the basic medical supplies and medicines needed to do their jobs. Saldivia stated that the mental health team displays an extremely willing and excellent attitude towards helping patients, but the lack of tools and equipment at their disposal renders them dysfunctional. In this environment where even prescribed treatments cannot be applied, patients' access to appropriate medicines has become almost impossible. In light of all these data, the authorities clearly argued that the state has created a complete vacuum in its mental health policies and left the public to their own fate.

The security problems experienced in the region also stand out as one of the top priority items on the agenda of the neighborhood representatives. Police teams taking action due to salary demands have to neglect routine patrols and security services in the city. In this context, the leaders, who stated that they have a deep-rooted history of forty-four years, reminded that the police station in their neighborhood has been closed for exactly three years since the current local administration took office. While the closure of the station leads to an increase in crime rates and causes the public to feel unsafe, efforts to strengthen the dialogue with the local administration continue. Joint works carried out with various operational units are considered as temporary and urgent solutions developed to restore the security schemes to their former state.

On the other hand, it is stated that the lack of infrastructure in neighborhoods far from the center also deeply affects the daily life quality of the public. In particular, inadequate street lighting paves the way for an increase in crime rates and creates an environment where citizens are afraid to go out at night. In addition, the long-term closure of state-supported community centers causes the poorest and most defenseless families in the city to be deprived of social support. Neighborhood leaders called on the authorities to urgently take concrete steps to resolve such chronic problems and not to settle for temporary measures. As a result, the people of Río Gallegos continue to feel the absence of the state, which is the guarantor of both their physical security and mental health, most severely in times of crisis.
