Columbia Üniversitesi Levien Spor Salonu Will Remain Closed Until the 2026-2027 Period

Levien Gymnasium, owned by Columbia Üniversitesi, will remain closed until the 2026-2027 academic year following the disaster that occurred in late January, which completely flooded the court areas. University officials confirmed that a comprehensive restoration process is planned for the repair of the damaged floor and the general structure of the facility. Although this extensive closure causes disruptions at one of the institution's most important facilities hosting various sports branches, it is seen as a mandatory step towards a permanent and safe solution. Furthermore, sports camps planned to be held in this area during the summer months have been moved to alternative venues determined by the university to ensure that students and participants are not inconvenienced. Officials stated that all logistical details are being meticulously worked out to manage the process with minimal disruption.

The source of the incident was identified as a burst water pipe in the Science and Engineering Library, located in the Northwest Corner Binası above Levien. Following this burst, water cascaded down from the library's ceiling like a waterfall, causing significant damage to the courts of the sports facility located on the floor below. Videos of the incident and statements made to the university's local newspaper clearly reveal that the water reached a bulky level inside the facility. Although the courts were initially thought to be suitable for play and closely monitored, the severity of the situation and long-term safety concerns necessitated the long-term closure of the facility. According to university officials, the restoration process is currently focused primarily on the reconstruction of the damaged floor. Moreover, during this process, not only will the existing damage be repaired, but the addition of new cables, power infrastructure, and modern electrical grids beneath the floor is also being considered. These planned infrastructure improvements are regarded as a highly critical opportunity for the facility to meet its future needs.

This project will go down in history as the most comprehensive and significant renovation Columbia Üniversitesi has undertaken within the facility in over a decade. Previously, in the summer of 2014, the university administration refreshed the overall appearance of the area by installing a modern-looking and technologically advanced new playing surface in the facility. Prior to the 2008-2009 season, new panels and additional equipment were added along the sidelines to promote the corporate sponsors of Columbia Athletics. Opened in 1974 with a capacity of 2,700, Levien Gymnasium is an important center of the university's sports culture with its deep-rooted history. Following this massive renovation process, the facility is expected to attain a much more modern atmosphere for both students' daily training and official competitions.

Upon completion of the repairs, the facility will be reopened for the use of both university teams and students, operating at full capacity with its three-court structure. This will be a great morale boost for the men's and women's basketball and volleyball teams, who are eagerly looking forward to returning to their home court after a long hiatus. Throughout the renovation process, the university is conducting a detailed scheduling and management process to minimize the negative impact on varsity teams and recreational activities.
