A New Era of Education and Enforcement for Safety in Courtenay Schools

The city of Courtenay, located in the province of British Columbia, Kanada, has taken a comprehensive step to improve traffic safety around schools. Following a detailed review of technical data and public feedback, city officials made concrete recommendations to ensure safety. With a decision made in Şubat, municipal staff were tasked with investigating traffic safety concerns, particularly on streets surrounding schools. This review also includes determining measures that will improve active transportation (walking, cycling, etc.) options for children and families. The aim is to establish a suitable infrastructure so that students can travel to school more safely and healthily.

As a result of the assessments, the city identified a series of priority improvement areas and presented them in a report. Among these priorities are physical measures to slow down traffic, the modernization of intersections, and the construction of protected bike lanes. Additionally, it is planned to support sidewalks with raised crossings and improved pedestrian infrastructure so that pedestrians can cross more safely. Director of Operational Services Kyle Shaw emphasized that, alongside these physical infrastructure investments, they place great importance on education and enforcement (strict enforcement of rules). Officials believe that road adjustments alone will not be sufficient and that the awareness of drivers and pedestrians must be increased.

As part of the education and encouragement initiatives, the goal is to instill active transportation in students through school programs. In this context, informative campaigns about school travel will be conducted in collaboration with significant partners such as the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC). Kyle Shaw stated that during this process, systems will be developed so that families and children can more easily access information about safe school routes. In terms of enforcement, targeted inspections will be carried out to prevent behaviors that endanger pedestrian safety and errors that block emergency access. City teams will continuously review the safety situation at specific points and implement necessary interventions immediately.

The announced report serves as a framework evaluating the first-year results of the 'Safe and Active Schools Program'. The city of Courtenay plans to expand and sustain the project after measuring the success of these initial steps. The municipality will begin preparing a comprehensive five-year master plan by receiving direction from the council at the council meeting to be held on 8 Temmuz. This long-term plan aims to set standards covering all schools across the city. Thus, future investments will be implemented with a strategic and holistic perspective.

It is also known that a strong collaboration has been established with local education authorities for this visionary project to progress successfully. The Courtenay Municipality developed the said plan and the safety measures taken in partnership with School District 71 (71 No'lu Okul Bölgesi). The contributions of the school district enabled them to accurately analyze students' daily routines and traffic density around schools.
