Disney's Live-Action 'Moana' Film Tops the Box Office but Falls Short of Expectations

Walt Disney's live-action 'Moana' adaptation ranked first at the North American box office, yet it did not see the expected interest during its opening weekend. The film, reported to have cost around 250 million dollars, earned 43 million dollars at the box office in its opening weekend in America and Canada. In international markets, the production grossed 52 million dollars in 50 countries, achieving a global total opening of 95 million dollars.

In the film directed by Thomas Kail, Dwayne Johnson returns as the demigod Maui, while Catherine Laga'aia portrays the Polynesian princess Moana. Although Laga'aia's performance garnered praise, critics criticized the film for being an almost exact copy of the original animation, and its score on Rotten Tomatoes remained at 34 percent. In contrast, audiences and especially parents approached the film more warmly; 78 percent of parents stated they would recommend the film to other parents.

Market analysts believe that the film's relatively low opening could be a result of saturation in the family film market. Currently competing at the box office with rivals like 'Minions and Monsters' and 'Toy Story 5', 'Moana' has entered a highly competitive environment where audiences have to decide among multiple options. Analysts also added that the box office success might not be limited to the opening weekend and could gain momentum in the coming weeks.
