Rate of Increase in Ebola Cases in DRC Puts World Health Organization on Alert

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has become the third largest outbreak ever recorded. While it is stated that the increase in cases reached its highest level in just one month, it is expressed that the outbreak cannot be brought under control. The fact that a large portion of new cases originate from unknown modes of transmission makes the situation even more complex.

The speed of the outbreak's spread has exceeded the response capacity of regional and international health institutions. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director of the WHO Emergency Health Management Program, stated that they estimate the scale of the outbreak to be at least two to four times the officially recorded cases. Authorities stated that approximately 80 percent of new cases come from outside the tracked contacts list and that the transmission chain cannot be identified.

On the other hand, it was reported that a significant portion of those who lost their lives died within their own communities without ever reaching a health center. This situation causes the virus to spread unnoticed between communities and makes it difficult to control the infection. Despite being the second largest country in Africa, the DRC, which is economically among the poorest countries in the world, is struggling with this crisis.
