Head-On Collision on the Wrong Side of A14 Highway in Italy: Bergamo Family Inherited

On the night between Friday and Saturday, a serious traffic accident occurred on Italy's A14 highway, narrowly avoiding a much larger tragedy. The incident took place between the Marotta and Fano sections, at approximately 03:40 AM. According to information obtained, a thirty-six-year-old driver residing in Fano entered the highway in the wrong direction, using the northbound lane to travel south. The vehicle proceeded in the wrong direction for about three kilometers, reaching the Tombaccia area, near Taus Lake. During this dangerous drive, a head-on collision with a vehicle belonging to a Bergamo-based family, who were traveling towards Fano in compliance with the rules, became inevitable. As a result of the violent collision, a total of four people were injured, including the wrong-way driver and the family members in the other vehicle, consisting of a mother, a father, and a young child.

Immediately after the accident, a large-scale rescue operation was launched with the dispatch of health and safety teams to the area. The first to arrive at the scene were teams from the Fano fire station, emergency medical service personnel (118), and law enforcement officers, primarily the Highway Police. The fire teams secured the vehicles involved in the accident to prevent potential new accidents and transformed the scene into a safe zone. At the same time, they worked in coordination with medical teams to assist in the process of extracting the injured from the vehicle. All four injured individuals were transported to the nearest hospital in Fano under the yellow code protocol. It was stated that the hospitalized injured parties were not in life-threatening condition and their conditions were stable.

Considering the magnitude of the tragedy and during the process of transporting the injured to the hospital, disruptions occurred in highway traffic. To conduct the rescue operations, secure the area, and remove the vehicles involved from the road, traffic flow in the northbound direction was temporarily halted. The mentioned lane remained closed to all vehicle traffic for about an hour, causing long queues among drivers. After the relevant teams completely cleared the area and made the road safe, traffic flow gradually returned to normal. Authorities are continuing their investigations into why the wrong-way driver was traveling in that direction.

Law enforcement is conducting a comprehensive investigation to clarify why the thirty-six-year-old driver entered the highway in the wrong direction. In the initial phase of the investigation, necessary tests are planned to be conducted to determine whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Once the driver's traffic violation and responsibility are confirmed, they are expected to face very severe sanctions under Italian traffic legislation. According to relevant regulations, such an offense requires an administrative fine ranging from 2,046 to 8,186 euros. Additionally, the penalties include the revocation of the driver's license and the impoundment of the vehicle used by the driver, barring it from traffic through an administrative procedure.

Authorities state that if the investigation reveals malicious intent or elements of a more serious crime regarding the accident's occurrence, the scope of the case may expand. In the Italian legal system, criminal penalties become much more severe if similar traffic accidents result in serious injuries or deaths. However, in this incident, the fact that no one lost their lives by chance and the injured are in good condition limits the potential criminal procedures. In particular, the fact that the damage suffered by the Bergamo family does not pose a life-threatening risk leads the prosecutor's office to evaluate the case as a minor traffic accident. Nevertheless, a final decision on the course of the case will be made once the judicial process is completed and the toxicology reports are clarified.
