Forest fires alarm in the Ancona region of Italy: Solar panels and negligence influential

Two separate and alarming fire incidents within the borders of the Ancona province in Italy have once again brought to light the increasing fire risks during the summer season and how minor negligence can lead to major disasters. Following the heat wave and drought affecting the region, the reality that even a single spark can turn into uncontrollably growing dangers in environmental and forest areas was faced. Authorities emphasized that these events also serve as a serious warning to increase fire safety awareness among the public, calling for everyone to be extremely cautious.

The first incident began with dense smoke detected by the gendarmerie while monitoring the area near the town of Serra de’ Conti. Teams arriving at the scene caught a resident burning plastic, polystyrene, paper, and various waste in an open area. This fire, which was immediately extinguished by forest ranger teams, showed how sensitive authorities are to such dangerous behavior despite bans. The individual was detained for necessary legal processing on the grounds of polluting the environment and creating a fire risk.

The second, and much more serious, event came to light as the investigation deepened into a fire that broke out in the Agugliano region last June and turned approximately five and a half hectares of agricultural land to ash. Technical examinations and images obtained from drones confirmed that the source of the fire was a photovoltaic solar panel belonging to an agricultural business, which had been in service for fifteen years and was understood to have been left unmaintained. The fire, which started as a result of a short circuit in the panels, grew large enough with the effect of the wind to threaten nearby residences.

During the detailed investigation process, analyses carried out with the participation of manufacturers and technical experts revealed signs of overheating and melting in the panels that caused the fire. In light of these findings, the person who is the responsible manager of the company he signed with, was formally complained about for acting negligently beyond misfortune and for the crime of 'casus incendio', i.e., causing fire due to lack of precaution. Following the event, authorities continue their work to determine how lack of inspections prepared the ground for disaster by also examining the maintenance history of the systems.

Following these disasters, the Italian Forest and Rural Guard Organization (Carabinieri Forestali) issued a critical warning to the public and relevant sector representatives. It was stated that especially in these days when temperature records are being broken, no fire should be lit in open areas under any circumstances and every activity that could cause fire should be avoided. Additionally, it was stipulated for life and property safety that periodic maintenance of electrical systems such as solar panels should not be neglected and extra care should be taken in the use of equipment such as agricultural tools that can generate sparks.
