Ecosystem Fires in the Carpathians: Rescuers Extinguished the Vast Majority

A critical threshold has been crossed in the ecosystem fires that occurred in recent days in Ukraine's Ivano-Frankivsk region (at the foothills of the Carpathians); regional rescuers managed to extinguish almost all of the fires by bringing them under control. According to a statement from the Ivano-Frankivsk regional main directorate of the State Emergency Service (DSNS), various fires that broke out in forest undergrowth and peatland areas within the scope of the operations were suppressed through a meticulous intervention. Authorities stated that the teams showed great dedication in the extinguishing efforts, which were made difficult by weather conditions and the terrain's structure. It was reported that cooling and complete control operations are currently continuing at only a single peatland fire source. The local population and the surrounding ecosystem are no longer under threat, thanks to the rapid and effective intervention of the teams.

According to detailed information, the forest undergrowth fire that broke out in the village of Stankivtsi, part of the Vitvitska regional community in the Kalush district, has been completely extinguished. The fire, which could have damaged the roots of trees and vegetation in this area, was brought under control before spreading over a large area thanks to the teams working day and night. Similarly, the peatland fire that broke out in the village of Dolinyani, part of the Rogatin regional community in the Ivano-Frankivsk district, was successfully suppressed. Because peatland fires tend to spread underground as well, extinguishing operations in these areas require great care and technical equipment. Rescue teams ensured that there was no loss of life or large-scale structural damage in these two critical areas. Patrol activities are now being carried out in these extinguished areas in the coming days against the possibility of a potential flare-up.

In addition to these, the forest fire in the village of Yablunitsa in the Nadvirna district, which previously caused great concern, has been completely extinguished, eliminating the danger. The fire that broke out in this forested area, which hosts the rich flora and fauna of the Carpathians, had posed a serious threat to regional biodiversity. However, thanks to the coordinated work of local fire and forest protection teams, the flames were eliminated before jumping to large forested areas. Authorities drew attention to the fact that the drying experienced in this region and possible human-induced negligence could trigger fires, inviting the public to be careful. The complete extinguishing of the forest fire has brought great relief for the wildlife and natural life cycle in the region. The teams also reported that rehabilitation works will be planned in the upcoming period in the areas that have been completely reduced to ashes or damaged.

When the current situation is evaluated as of the morning of 8 July, extinguishing operations are continuing only for a peatland fire in the village of Kolokolyn, part of the Bukačivska regional community in the Ivano-Frankivsk district. In this specific area, the water reaching the flames requires a highly difficult process due to the peat layers burning underground. For this reason, emergency teams continue to remain in the area with special pumping systems and equipment to complete the extinguishing process and completely stop the underground fire. Authorities believe that this last remaining fire source will also be brought under control and extinguished completely in a short time. Considering the long-term environmental effects of peat fires, the complete cooling of this area is considered a critical step in ensuring regional security. It is expected that this final operation will be successfully concluded for the air quality and natural life in Ivano-Frankivsk to return to normal.

On the other hand, these ecosystem fires experienced in the region have also brought general fire safety concerns in Ivano-Frankivsk and its surroundings to the agenda. During the same period, a fire that broke out in the "Kosmos" cinema building, located in the city center of Ivano-Frankivsk and characterized as a historic structure, mobilized rescuers once again. In addition, a fire that broke out in a workshop/manufacturing section belonging to a private enterprise in the Kalush region led to both economic losses and a review of local industrial safety issues. Authorities emphasize that precautions must be increased against this rising trend in both natural areas and residential and industrial zones. Fire cases, which seasonally increase with the combination of rising temperatures and possible negligence, make it mandatory for DSNS teams to remain on alert. These events clearly demonstrate the need to protect not only the ecosystem but also the cultural heritage and local industrial infrastructure of the region against fires.
