Colombia's Washington Ambassador demands explanation in Durán case killed by US agents

Colombia's Ambassador to the US, Daniel García-Peña, stated that they have not yet received a response from the Trump administration regarding the killing of Colombian citizen Joan Sebastián Durán by US immigration agents. The ambassador noted that they have sent protest notes and official requests to the Department of National Security and the Department of Justice to clarify the incident. President Gustavo Petro, on the other hand, requested an official criminal complaint to take the matter to court.

Following the incident, a widespread reaction occurred in the US and Colombia; figures such as former Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar condemned the actions of the immigration agents. Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe also expressed his sorrow over Durán's death. Additionally, it was reported that continuous contact is being maintained with local US authorities through the embassy channels between the two countries and the Boston consulate.

Ambassador García-Peña criticized the incoming government's plan to fully align its foreign policy with the US, emphasizing that the rights of Colombians must be protected. He also criticized the fact that Vice President-elect José Manuel Restrepo did not establish any contact with the embassy during his visit to the US, and that the incoming government led by Abelardo de la Espriella has made no statement regarding this incident. It is currently unknown who will take over García-Peña's duties after 7 August.
