Harsh Words for China and Pro-Trump Foreign Policy from Kolombiya's New Minister of Foreign Affairs

With the new government led by Abelardo de la Espriella taking office in Kolombiya, fundamental changes in foreign policy are expected. The views of Omar Bula Escobar, appointed as the minister of foreign affairs by Esriella, largely overlap with the most radical foreign policy agenda of the "Patria Milagro" program. Using very harsh language towards the People's Republic of China, Bula describes the country as "la mugre del planeta" (the scum of the planet). These striking and extreme expressions are considered the first signals of how sharp Kolombiya's new diplomatic tone in the international arena will be. The vision of the new minister of foreign affairs is built on an overt hostility towards international organizations such as the Birleşmiş Milletler and the concept of globalism. According to his own statements, Kolombiya should distance itself from the BM, which he claims has succumbed to a globalist agenda, and shed these traditional ties in the international arena. On the other hand, the ABD administration is seen as the most important ally in Bula's foreign policy strategy. Advocating a strict alignment of Kolombiya's foreign policy with the Donald Trump administration, Bula believes that relations between countries should be reshaped ideologically. He argues that an all-out "culture war" must be waged against a network he believes is secretly financed by billionaire George Soros and sees as a leftist conspiracy. Media organizations and non-governmental organizations are also among the groups he claims manage this leftist conspiracy. This activity corresponds to a much higher figure compared to the 166 thousand tweets of the current Kolombiya President Gustavo Petro. The numbers clearly reveal his persistent digital power in persuading the masses and spreading his ideological agenda.

With the expected appointment of this heavily criticized figure to office, Kolombiya's geopolitical position has begun to be questioned. A complete rupture in the foreign policy of the country, which traditionally holds a strategic position, is being closely watched both in Latin America and globally. It remains uncertain what consequences the new government's approach—which both belittles the great power in the East and steers its ties with Western allies according to a far-right ideology—will bring. How diplomatic relations will be conducted with these radical rhetoric, and what reflections these rhetoric will have on the country's economy, stand out as the greatest curiosity among political analysts in the region.
