Lagos Launched a New Competition to Find Student-Focused Solutions to Energy Problems

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Lagos State, 2026, has opened registrations to organize the first edition of the Lagos Cleaner Energy Schools Innovation Competition (LCESIC). This exciting initiative invites secondary school students to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to the country's ongoing energy problems. The Ministry sees this project not only as a competition but also as a strategic step aimed at uncovering the potential of the region's youth. Designed to nurture students' creativity, develop their critical thinking skills, and support their practical problem-solving abilities, the program aims to train the energy leaders of the future. Through this, Lagos State is not only improving the current infrastructure but also making a serious investment in human resources.

Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources Biodun Ogunleye, who made a statement on the matter, emphasized that this competition is a critical investment for the future of Lagos and reflects the state's commitment to youth empowerment, innovation, and sustainable development. Ogunleye stated that the future of sustainable energy depends not only on physical infrastructure but, more importantly, on the talented individuals who will design and manage these systems. The Commissioner, who shared his vision of building an innovation ecosystem extending from classroom education to real-world impacts, wants students to feel that their ideas are highly valuable. Furthermore, he stated that the government is ready to contribute to efforts to overcome energy crises in the country by supporting young brains. This approach brings a holistic perspective to education by encouraging scientific research and collaboration.

The competition in question is open to eligible 9th grade and 10th grade students studying in the First, Second, and Third Education Districts of Lagos State. Schools wishing to participate must form teams consisting of five students, one advisory teacher, and one mentor. Teams are expected to develop concrete and applicable clean energy solutions by working in designated technical areas. The competition process begins with students entering a fierce battle in the elimination round to be held in their respective districts. Teams that succeed in this stage and earn the right to top their districts ultimately get the opportunity to participate in the grand State Championship, where the best projects across the state will compete.

The Ministry also announced that this meaningful initiative is fully aligned with the THEMES+ Agenda of the Lagos State Government. The THEMES+ Agenda represents a comprehensive vision based on strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and supporting the development of youth. Competitions organized in this context make significant contributions to advancing clean energy innovation and regional development across the country. In addition, such projects further solidify Lagos's position as the center of technological advancement and a pioneering cultural hub of 2026. Providing students with the opportunity to engage with STEM disciplines at an early age is considered a step that will also serve the country's long-term technological independence.

All middle schools and high schools in eligible education districts are encouraged to form their teams, appoint advisory teachers and mentors, and complete their necessary registrations via the official application portal. The state administration is very hopeful for providing this opportunity for young people to explore their potential in the energy field. Such education-focused initiatives not only enrich students' academic lives but also equip them with vital skills such as teamwork, project management, and time planning.
