Operating in the northwest of Londra, the Brent Indian Community Centre (BI-CC) has taken a major step to solve the problem of digital exclusion among the elderly population. To date, more than 280 senior citizens have successfully completed their training under the program named "Smartphones and Tablets Made Easy for Seniors." The average age of participants in the course is reported to be 71, with some participants reaching the age of 83. This program, which has even attracted the interest of retired doctors, was specially designed for individuals who have never used digital devices. Supported by the Brent Council and the National Lottery Community Fund, the initiative aims to remove the barrier between participants and modern technology.

This comprehensive ten-week training program enables older people to acquire essential skills that will facilitate their daily lives. During the course, participants are provided with their own tablets, while practical training is given on topics such as connecting to Wi-Fi, using mobile applications, and making video calls. Additionally, trainees learn how to access the Britanya Ulusal Sağlık Servisi (NHS) and local municipal services online. Vital topics such as using public transportation applications, managing their devices safely, and recognizing online fraud tactics, including artificial intelligence, also constitute an important part of the curriculum. Along with government emergency alerts and digital security, brain games aimed at increasing mental activity are also introduced to the participants.

The project in question was initially launched as a two-year initiative with the Brent Council's neighborhood infrastructure fund (NCIL). Later, thanks to additional financial support from the National Lottery (National Lottery), the program was extended for four more years, and as of 14 Ekim 2024, six different training groups were successfully completed. Authorities state that the demand for the course is well beyond the current capacity and that new participants usually join the system through the recommendations of previous graduates. Taking this intense interest into consideration, the organizers decided to open six extra training groups over the next two years. With the continuous support of the National Lottery Community Fund, the community center plans to further expand its digital inclusion program in the coming years.

One of the most notable aspects of the program is the long-term support mechanism offered after the completion of the training. Participants who complete the course continue to benefit from a help line via WhatsApp, telephone technical support, and online refresher sessions for five years. Program leader Raj Mistry stated that the demand among the elderly is still very high, noting that former participants now serve as volunteer support teachers. By providing one-on-one assistance to new learners, these volunteers not only reinforce the success of the course but also strengthen solidarity within the community. According to the statement made by the BI-CC, thanks to these trainings, graduates can now independently create NHS appointments, communicate comfortably with relatives on digital platforms, and act much more consciously against online fraud.

The integration of elderly individuals into the digital world is of great importance in terms of reducing social isolation and increasing their independence in daily life. Conservative Member of Parliament Bob Blackman hosted the members of the Brent Hint Topluluk Merkezi at the İngilizler Avam Kamarası'nda (House of Commons) and personally presented certificates to the latest graduates. Blackman stated that more than 280 people have completed the program so far, emphasizing that digital skills training has become increasingly critical for the elderly population to access services and maintain social connections. Such local community initiatives are successfully showcased as role models in closing the technology access inequality gap. The success of the trainings proves that digital literacy is not limited by age and that everyone can benefit from modern technologies with the right support.
