The Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People (CPCJ), operating in the Mafra region of Portugal, has shared with the public the number of files opened this year. According to the data in question, the institution opened a total of 858 new protection cases throughout the entire year of 2025. In addition, it was stated that 483 new cases were recorded in the six-month period up to June 23 of 2026 alone. These figures reveal how high and continuous the need for the protection of minors in the region is. Authorities emphasize that social support mechanisms must be strengthened in this process, where the demand is increasing day by day.

The Mafra central area ranks first among the settlements from which the most notifications and complaints are received across the region. It is followed by the popular coastal town of Ericeira, Malveira, the Union of São Miguel de Alcainça, and areas such as Encarnação, respectively. Furthermore, reports reflected that a significant number of incidents occurred in Venda do Pinheiro and the Union of Santo Estêvão das Galés. Although fewer cases were detected in the remaining other neighborhoods and parishes, these situations are also of great importance for child welfare. Authorities state that every notification, regardless of the region, is taken seriously and the necessary intervention processes are meticulously conducted.

When examining the content of the incidents reported to the Commission, certain types of neglect and abuse that prominently stand out draw attention. Foremost among these is children witnessing violent arguments between parents or domestic violence incidents and being exposed to this environment. Secondly, behavioral disorders such as aggression or disrespect seen in children and young people due to their parents' inadequate intervention were highly reported. The third major problem is parental neglect, which manifests itself in the form of failure to meet basic nutrition, shelter, and personal hygiene needs. These three categories form the basis of the most frequent social problems encountered by the institution that require urgent solutions.

Current statistics show that the sources for detecting and reporting cases to the institution are quite diverse. The National Republican Guard (GNR) ranks first among the institutions that most frequently report suspected situations involving children. It is followed by official notifications made through teachers and school counseling services, as well as judicial authorities such as the Attorney General's Office (Ministério Público). In addition, anonymous notifications reflecting public sensitivity play a very critical role in case detection. This broad network of cooperation functions as the most important mechanism ensuring that minors at risk are identified in a timely manner and taken into protection.

On the other hand, the Mafra CPCJ also expressed significant concerns regarding social dynamics and infrastructure problems in the region. The institution's authorities are seriously concerned, particularly about the overcrowding of classes and capacity in schools reaching extreme levels. Because this crowded learning environment can create instability among students and acts as a triggering factor for disagreements among youths. However, language barriers and different parenting habits brought about by the multicultural structure of the region also create difficulties in integration processes. Experts state that while preserving the positive aspects of this multicultural structure, education and integration support programs for families urgently need to be increased.
