2026 Electricity Prices Announced in Mısır: New Tariffs and Hike Rates

Mısır Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that a 20 percent increase in electricity consumption will be applied for certain commercial activities in order to regulate operating hours during the daylight saving time period. This new regulation specifically targets commercial businesses that continue to operate after official closing hours. According to the Prime Minister's statements, the mentioned price hike heavily covers shops, restaurants, and cafes. The electricity bills of businesses that fail to comply with the legislation and insist on staying open outside the determined working hours will be calculated according to the new tariff. This step is being taken to ensure energy consumption discipline in the country and to balance the energy demand during the summer months.

According to the details of the decree issued by the government, the extra 20 percent price increase is limited only to certain commercial activities. The mentioned sanction directly affects, in particular, restaurants and cafes that continue to stay open after the official closing time during the daylight saving time. However, businesses that fully comply with the working hours set by the government and operate within working hours will not be subject to this additional hike. The electricity bills of these businesses will continue to be calculated according to standard commercial tariffs. Authorities emphasize that this regulation is not a general penalty for the entire commercial sector, but a measure targeting only non-compliant businesses.

In the 2026 residential electricity tariffs announced by the Mısır Electricity and Renewable Energy Ministry, a general stability stands out. In the mentioned tariff, while the prices of low and medium consumption tiers were not changed, a 16 percent hike was applied only to the seventh tier, which is the highest consumption band. Accordingly, the tariff for those consuming between one and 50 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month was set at 68 kuruş (piastre), while the 51-100 kWh consumption range remained at 78 kuruş. While the fee applied for consumption between 101 and 200 kWh is 95 kuruş, the price in the 201-350 kWh band was fixed at 1.55 Mısır Lirası. The 351-650 kWh band, which concerns the mid-high consumption group, continues to be priced at 1.95 Mısır Lirası, and the consumption between 651-1000 kWh at 2.10 Mısır Lirası.

Consumers with the highest electricity consumption in residences, spending over 1000 kWh of energy per month, are directly affected by the hike in the new period. The price of the mentioned seventh tier, the highest consumption band, was increased from 2.23 Mısır Lirası in the previous period to 2.58 Mısır Lirası. In the standard commercial electricity tariffs announced by the Ministry, a fee of 162 kuruş is applied for consumption up to 100 kWh, and 216 kuruş for the portion up to 250 kWh. Commercial businesses are required to pay 264 kuruş for their consumption up to 600 kWh, and 274 kuruş for the portion up to 1000 kWh. For high-consuming commercial subscribers exceeding 1000 kWh per month, the unit price was set at 279 kuruş.

The conversion of the new additional fee applied to non-compliant commercial businesses into a sanction stands out as merely a part of more comprehensive measures aimed at regulating working hours throughout the summer season. The Mısır government continues to emphasize such administrative and economic measures to ensure the security of energy supply and alleviate the grid load. The current electricity tariffs continue to remain valid exactly as they are for all other tiers and subscriber categories in line with the previously announced decisions. Authorities believe that such tiered pricing and sanction systems are important for consumers and businesses to save energy. It is expected that similar political steps will be taken in the upcoming period depending on the fluctuations in energy markets and consumption habits.
