Northern Governors of Nigeria Established a Joint Fund for Regional Security

State governors in northern Nigeria have taken a joint step to resolve increasing security problems and established a Board of Trustees for the North Nigeria Security Trust Fund (NNSTF). This important decision was made at a joint meeting held by the Northern States Governors Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna. Governors, traditional leaders, and senior security officials attended the meeting, seeking permanent solutions to the security crises deeply affecting the region. According to the decision made, each state in the region will contribute one billion Naira every month for the fund to be continuous and strong. This financial resource unit is stated to be of vital importance for supporting security operations and strengthening regional cooperation.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, who hosted the meeting, emphasized that the security problem is not an issue that a single state can solve on its own. Governor Sani stated that a deep cooperation is needed between state governments, the federal government, and traditional leaders who are close to the local people to establish permanent peace. It was expressed that traditional rulers could play a very critical role in ensuring social peace and intelligence gathering processes. The Governor added that the discussions addressed at the meeting focused on finding sustainable solutions to the security problems in the region, and that open and meaningful progress was made. This joint stance is considered a strong indication of the need for unity against the long-standing violence in the region.

The main purpose of the established security fund is to equip the security forces in the region with modern equipment and maximize inter-agency intelligence sharing. Prominent security experts from Nigeria and respected elders of the Northern region are included in the Board, ensuring the effective and appropriate use of the fund. At the meeting, President Bola Tinubu's efforts and reform steps to improve the security system across the country also received great praise. The governors clearly stated that they would support the federal government's vision in the security sector and increase operational capacity. Thanks to this fund, it is aimed to meet the logistical needs of the security personnel faster and more regularly.

Another important topic that drew attention during the discussions was the constitutional amendment initiative towards establishing a State Police organization across the country. Northern governors and leaders argued that state policing should be implemented as soon as possible and that this would significantly increase public safety. According to the leaders, state police will be much more effective in protecting life and property security, provided that appropriate legal frameworks, oversight mechanisms, and working principles are established. It is thought that this new structure will allow for a faster response to local dynamics by closing the gaps of the federal police forces. The elders in the region called for this step to be urgently implemented once constitutional obstacles are overcome.
