Historic Transformation in Sarzana: Carducci School is Being Demolished, XXI Luglio Comes Back to Life

A significant urban transformation process is taking place in the Italian city of Sarzana. The historic Carducci middle school building, which has been part of the city's skyline for decades and hosted thousands of students, is being completely demolished after becoming unusable today. This corner of the city is taking on a completely new identity following the construction of the new Poggi school building, which opened in September two years ago, and now the removal of the old Carducci block. This situation also brings an emotional change, especially for the older generation who remember that the city's first football stadium was once located in that area. While citizens witness the rise of modern and safe buildings replacing the historic structures they were accustomed to, they see a promising vision for the city's future taking shape.

The demolition work has been tendered by the Ire company to the Bonfiglio firm for a total of 300 thousand euros. This demolition operation constitutes the final stage carried out to complete phase 1B of the comprehensive project, which envisages the reconstruction of the existing school complex. Construction machines working non-stop in the area for days ensure that these walls, where students from various parts of the Val di Magra region are educated, are completely destroyed within a few hours. The remains are planned to be nothing but dust clouds and rubble piles, kept under control by continuously spraying water. Setting aside the historical memories of the old structures, this physical demolition represents a decisive and clear step the city has taken on its path to modernization.

The mentioned demolition process is expected to take about two months, after which the focus will shift to the recycling of the emerging materials. Adopting an eco-friendly approach, the debris will not be disposed of as waste in any way; on the contrary, it will be reprocessed and transformed into recycled aggregate. This renewed construction material obtained will be used in the construction of the perimeter walls extending along San Bartolomeo street and in the landscaping of the outdoor areas. Thus, both construction waste will be minimized and the environmental footprint of the project will be significantly reduced. This method, which highlights sustainability, reveals the presence of a remarkable ecological awareness in the city's infrastructure investments.

The demolished Carducci building, the adjacent Parentucelli high school, and the Poggi complex were actually evacuated as a result of a critical development experienced in the summer of 2018. This massive structure, hosting approximately 700 elementary and middle school students, was urgently evacuated and closed for use after detailed inspections revealed that it carried a serious earthquake risk and was seismically inadequate. The total cost of this massive project, described as one of the largest and most important public investments in the Sarzana municipality in recent years, amounts to around 10,5 million euros. This massive budget was provided through a financing model created by combining regional, national, and local municipal funds. By taking on this great financial burden, the city demonstrated a highly determined stance regarding children growing up in safe and modern educational environments.

Efforts to renew Sarzana's educational infrastructure and urban revitalization are not limited to the Carducci and Poggi complexes. Restoration work is also continuing at full speed on the old school building on XXI Luglio boulevard, one of the city's other symbolic and historic structures, which has been unusable since 2006. The Sarzana Municipality has managed to secure a fund of over 5 million euros from state-backed grant programs to give this very special building a new life cycle with a completely different purpose, taking it outside traditional educational and instructional activities. This comprehensive project aims to reintegrate the building, which will be made compliant with earthquake regulations, into the cultural and social life of the city. All these steps clearly reveal Sarzana's profound vision for leaving a safe, sustainable, and multi-functional urban heritage to the future while respecting its history.
