Bear Attack in Seferihisar: Dies While Sleeping in Front of His Home

The Karakoç location of Doğanbey Neighborhood in Seferihisar district of İzmir became the scene of a tragic event late at night. 70-year-old Osman Güntaş was attacked by a bear, determined to have descended into the area, while sleeping on a couch in front of his house. While the depth and shock of the incident caused concern among the local population, it brought the natural risks that citizens living in rural areas might encounter back to the agenda. This sudden attack was the first link of an unfortunate chain that caused the elderly man to lose his life.

Upon the 112 Emergency Call Center being alerted by those who noticed the situation at the time of the attack, a large number of gendarmerie and medical teams were dispatched to the scene. After their initial intervention, the teams took the injured Osman Güntaş to Seferihisar Necat Hepkon State Hospital, the nearest health institution in the region. However, due to the severity of his injuries and the continuing vital danger, the elderly man was referred to a better-equipped center, Dokuz Eylül University Research and Application Hospital, following the initial treatment here. This process functioned as an emergency intervention process racing against time.

Despite the intense efforts of the doctors and the attempted treatments at Dokuz Eylül University Research and Application Hospital, Osman Güntaş could not be saved. Güntaş passed away as a result of the severe injuries he sustained in the bear attack, plunging his family, loved ones, and the residents of Doğanbey Neighborhood into deep grief. Following the incident, the judicial and administrative processes initiated have begun to reveal the official dimension of this painful loss.

Following this sad event, security and inspections were initiated meticulously in the region. In addition to the gendarmerie teams, officials from the Department of Nature Conservation and National Parks launched extensive efforts to locate the bear and assess the risk in the area. The teams are intensively continuing search and scan activities to identify the bear that carried out the attack, prevent it from harming another citizen, and control the animal without harming nature. These inspections are of great importance both for the judicial process and for public health.

Despite the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of those living in the region, it has been revealed how difficult it is to completely eliminate risks in areas where wildlife is close to human living spaces. Nature Conservation and National Parks officials warned citizens, especially not to be alone in rural areas and at night, and called for caution to prevent similar incidents. Osman Güntaş's corpse has been taken to the relevant institutions to be handed over to his family after forensic examinations, preparing him for his final journey.
