The Tuna Bölgesi Water Company (DMRV Zrt.) in Macaristan has called on the municipalities and the public in its service areas to make emergency water savings. The company announced that following its warning on Friday, water consumption did not decrease as expected, but on the contrary, increased significantly. This alarming increase has necessitated immediate water restrictions to ensure that residents' basic water needs can be met. Authorities have issued severe warnings that if the current consumption rate continues, the region's water network could collapse entirely. It is emphasized that repairing such a disaster in the system could take a long time and affect large populations.

In the region where the heatwave continues to have an impact, providing uninterrupted and safe drinking water is stated to be not a luxury, but a critical necessity. The first-degree water restrictions declared in some settlements last Friday had banned activities such as garden watering, filling pools, and car washing with tap water. However, despite these bans, the continued increase in water consumption in these settlements has disappointed the authorities. This situation reveals that the public has not sufficiently complied with the restriction decisions and that the severity of the extraordinary period has not been fully understood. Company officials state that active cooperation and sacrifice from the public are essential to manage the crisis.

As of Monday morning, due to the overloading of the water network in the region, water services were completely stopped in the settlement called Szada, leaving the town without water. This incident went down in history as the first settlement in the company's service area to be left completely without water. As time progressed, water shortages began to emerge not only in the Gödöllő district but also in other settlements located on the right bank of the Tuna and at higher altitudes. Moreover, in certain parts of the network in specific areas of towns such as Üröm, Pomáz, and Solymár, drinking water was completely depleted. Authorities underline that if there is no immediate and radical decrease in water usage volume, many more neighborhoods and towns will share the same fate of water shortage.

In order to prevent a total network collapse and widespread water scarcity, the company has requested all municipalities it serves to declare a second-degree state of preparedness. The second-degree restrictions expand the water usage ban, limiting it not only to civilians but also covering commercial and economic enterprises in towns and cities. Authorities noted that compared to a normal business day, water consumption is still at critical levels and is even higher than a typical weekend consumption in the summer period. The systems' inability to reach sufficient capacity to refill water levels in storage reservoirs increases the pressure on the technical infrastructure day by day. It was reported that if consumers do not limit their water usage only to essential needs within the next few hours, the risk of the entire network system collapsing is very high.

The main purpose of these radical measures taken by the water company and the reduction in pressure is to ensure the continuity of vital services by securing the public's basic water needs. The immediate halt of all non-vital water uses will ensure that sufficient water is allocated for basic human needs such as drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene. Furthermore, these restrictions allow hospitals and other critical public institutions to operate uninterruptedly, while also protecting water resources for firefighting teams to respond to possible fire disasters. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, in his statement on the matter, pointed out that water usage has reached record levels, emphasizing that emergency measures must be taken without waiting for the system to collapse. These statements reveal to what extent the danger of drought and extreme heat has become a top-tier political and social agenda nationwide.
