Medical students' forest_PARTY turns into disaster in Toulouse: University issues disciplinary penalty

Following an integration night held in the Bouconne forest near the French city of Toulouse, multiple medical faculty students were subjected to disciplinary penalties. The event, attended by second-year medical students and consisting of a total of 55 people, unexpectedly spiraled out of control. In the aftermath of the incident, the university administration referred the matter to the disciplinary board, while the legal process concluded with a decision of non-prosecution. The disciplinary decisions taken by the university have sparked a debate that deeply affects both the students and the academic community. Authorities emphasize that stricter measures are necessary to prevent similar cases from recurring.

The incident occurred during an orientation and bonding night organized on 24 Eylül 2025 in the Bouconne forest near Toulouse. This event, which brought together second-year medical students, quickly turned into a complete scene of chaos. After participants consumed excessive amounts of alcohol and some lost consciousness, individuals who noticed the situation called for emergency help. Rescue teams dispatched to the area tried to locate the 55 participants one by one in the dark and rugged terrain of the forest. As a result of the teams' hours-long efforts, many who were on the verge of alcohol-induced coma were found on the shore of a lake or in difficult conditions.

During the rescue operation, numerous ambulances, fire engines, and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the area. Three students required hospitalization, and it was announced that the condition of one of them was extremely critical. The hospitalized student's life-threatening condition once again highlighted the gravity of the incident. It was reported that the other participants were examined and subsequently removed from the scene. This incident, which garnered significant attention in the French press, brought the dangers of university 'bizutage' (hazing/initiation) rituals to the agenda. Authorities expressed concern that events started for entertainment purposes could turn into such a massive crisis.

The judicial investigation launched following the incident lasted for approximately a year, ultimately yielding no results, and the case was closed with a 'non-prosecution' decision. However, the conclusion of the legal process did not prevent the university administration from intervening in the matter. The administration of the Toulouse Medical Faculty officially initiated disciplinary proceedings against the students involved in and organizing the event. The disciplinary board cited that the students endangered both their own lives and needlessly occupied public health resources. In this context, many were punished with sanctions ranging from warnings to temporary suspension from school.

This incident has once again opened up for discussion the dark side of initiation rituals called 'bizutage', which affect millions of students in France every year. These events, traditionally organized to help new students adapt to the group, can sometimes result in uncontrolled violence and alcohol consumption. The Toulouse incident demonstrated that such practices are not merely a fun tradition, but also pose serious personal safety risks. Education experts and authorities argue that new legal regulations are needed to supervise such events and eliminate the pressure on student unions. The medical faculty administration, on the other hand, demonstrated a decisive stance against such dangerous practices through the disciplinary penalties it imposed.
