Seismic Activities and Earthquake Details Experienced on 6 Temmuz in Venezuela

Venezuela was shaken by numerous small-scale earthquakes recorded in various parts of the country throughout the day on 6 Temmuz. According to Funvisis (Venezuela Sismoloji Araştırma Vakfı) data and live broadcast monitoring, the magnitudes of the tremors that occurred during the day generally varied between 2.1 and 2.9 Moment Magnitude (Mw). These low-intensity seismic movements were concentrated especially in settlements close to the northern coastal strip, such as Naiguatá, Puerto Píritu, San Felipe, and La Guaira. Authorities stated that earthquakes of this magnitude generally do not cause serious structural damage, but the public must always remain alert. The Naiguatá region was one of the places where seismic activity was most frequently observed during the day. The tremors, which started in the morning hours, continued in the later hours of the day, causing concern among the local population. For example, at 20:24 local time, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.6 was recorded at a depth of 7.8 kilometers, 6 kilometers southwest of Naiguatá. Additionally, aftershocks and independent tremors with magnitudes between 2.4 and 2.8, occurring at very shallow depths such as 3.1 km, 4.4 km, and 7.3 km, were detected at different points in the region. Experts state that shallow earthquakes like these have a higher rate of being felt, but they do not pose a threat due to their small magnitudes.

Outside of Naiguatá, intense seismic activity was also observed in other coastal and island regions located in the north of Venezuela. While an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.1 occurred at a depth of 9.2 kilometers, 19 kilometers southeast of Puerto Píritu, another tremor with a magnitude of 2.7 was recorded at a depth of 5.1 kilometers, 33 kilometers northeast of San Felipe. Furthermore, earthquakes with magnitudes of approximately 2.6 to 2.9 were reported northeast of Los Roques Adası and south of La Tortuga Adası. This situation once again revealed that the northern coastline of the country is located on active fault lines and is under constant tectonic stress. Following the successive minor earthquakes, authorities provided some safety advice to warn the public against potential larger disasters.
