Forest fire in Greece's Serez district brought under control

The agricultural-forest fire that broke out in the Oynussa (Oinoussa) area of the Serez (Serres) district, located in northern Greece, was contained as a result of intensive intervention by firefighting teams, leaving no active front. According to the latest statement from the Fire Department, the fire is now under control and the risk of spread has been largely eliminated. It is reported that a large number of firefighters and vehicles dispatched to the region managed to extinguish the fire after weeks of struggle. The teams remain in the area against the risk of possible flare-ups and continue extinguishing efforts uninterruptedly. Authorities emphasize that despite the situation being stabilized, precautions are not being relaxed.

As part of the firefighting efforts, a considerable force was dispatched to the region, and these teams continue the operation at full speed. A total of 75 firefighters are conducting extinguishing efforts in the difficult terrains reached by the flames. Additionally, foot teams from the 2nd and 21st EMODE (Special Disaster Response Units) are actively on duty in parts of the terrain inaccessible to vehicles. Ground teams were supported by 20 fire engines and numerous aircraft, increasing the intervention capacity. Thanks to this comprehensive deployment, it was possible to bring the fire under control in a short time.

Due to its close proximity to the area, the fire had caused a serious security concern for the local population. Because of its proximity to the incident site, 112, Greece's official emergency notification system, was immediately activated. Via the system, an informative message was sent to the residents of Oynussa, advising them to immediately relocate to the Neos Souli (Yeni Souli) area due to the danger. This preventive evacuation decision is considered an important safety measure taken against the risk of the fire spreading to residential areas. It is reported that thanks to the relocation of residents to safe zones, no casualties or injuries occurred.

The incident once again highlights how quickly forest and agricultural fires, which Greece constantly faces during the summer months, can pose a threat. The Serez region has a geography suitable for the rapid spread of fire over large areas due to dry climate conditions and the effect of wind. In similar disaster situations, rapid response and the effective use of early warning systems play a critical role in preventing loss of life and property. In this incident too, the activation of the 112 system and the rapid deployment of teams to the region contributed to limiting the scale of the disaster. The Greek government and local authorities continue to remain vigilant against such risks throughout the forest fire season.

Efforts are expected to continue for a while longer to completely extinguish the fire and ensure there is no danger left in the region. Firefighting teams are applying cooling procedures in the areas still suffering from smoke, trying to prevent the rekindling of underlying embers. The extent of material damage in the region and the cause of the fire are not yet clear; investigations into the matter are expected to be launched. Authorities announced that the local population can return to their homes after the danger has passed, but the fire department must complete all procedures. The incident stands out as an example showing how decisive rapid response and effective coordination can be in managing natural disasters.
