16-Year-Old Student Stands for 16 Hours Reciting the Qur'an from Memory

16-year-old Tengku Umayr 'Akef Tengku Asyraf, who attends the Al-Fateh Hafiz Qur'an Course located in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, has achieved a truly impressive feat. The young student was subjected to a 15-hour and 42-minute exam (tasmik), reciting the entire Holy Qur'an from memory. At the end of this intensive exam, he managed to obtain the "Şehadet-i Ula" title, which is the highest certificate awarded for Qur'an memorization. Tengku Umayr's achievement stands out as a point he reached as a result of months and years of strict discipline and devotion. At the same time, the perfect score of 97.7 percent achieved by the young student in this challenging exam, which involved six different judges, reveals his unique talent.

Ahmet Lutfi Paridin, the director of the Al-Fateh Qur'an Course, emphasized that his student did not achieve this success in a single day; on the contrary, it is the fruit of years of struggle and patience. According to Paridin, the most important factors in this process are the student's determination to learn, his great discipline, and his personal sacrifices for his spiritual journey. It was noted that during his 1,260 days of education at the course, Tengku Umayr was always known as a well-mannered, modest student who never disobeyed his teachers. The director stated that behind this success lies an unquestionable dedication to classes, worship, and Qur'anic education. Therefore, the high score achieved represents much more than just a number; it represents the story of years and a spiritual maturation.

It is stated that the exam, which lasted over 15 hours, was an extremely grueling process both physically and mentally. It was reported that during the exam, Tengku Umayr took only a 22-minute break to pray and eat, after which he continued reciting. The recitation continued uninterruptedly from the first time period after the morning call to prayer, well beyond the night's Isha call to prayer. This uninterrupted recitation process proves what a challenging trial it was, testing the student's power of concentration, determination, and faith. It must not be forgotten that during the recitation, he stood and spoke relying entirely on his memory, not on the text of the Holy Qur'an.

Director Ahmet Lutfi Paridin stated that much more emotional and challenging moments were experienced when reaching the last 15 juz of the recitation. At this stage, it was noted that Tengku Umayr fell into a semi-faint state due to extreme fatigue and exhaustion, but he lost nothing of the clarity of his memorization. In the evaluation made by the judges, it was recorded that no errors were detected in the young student's recitation and no corrections were made. Despite his semi-faint state, reciting the Qur'anic verses with flawless fluency and complete accuracy plunged those around him into great admiration and emotion. This extraordinary situation was considered the greatest proof showing that the child memorized these texts not only mentally but also with spiritual ease and faith.

It is stated that there are very serious prerequisites in order to be worthy of such high-level memorization tests (Şehadet-i Ula). For a student like Tengku Umayr to earn the right to take the exam, he is required to repeat his memorization at least six more times after completing all 30 juz of the Qur'an from beginning to end. This situation is a clear indication of how difficult it is to award a certificate or diploma in Islamic education and how high the standards are. Tengku Umayr became an exemplary young man, constantly advising his peers never to neglect their Qur'an memorization even if they are caught between worship and social activities. This commendable achievement beautifully reveals to the whole world how the prayers of families, the patience of teachers, and the determination of the student are crowned with a spiritual victory.
